Rebirth and karma in the evolution of religion

Imagining karma studies how rebirth eschatology evolves into karma eschatology. Eschatology is ideas about life after death. Rebirth is the theory that the dead return to the living. Karma is the theory that the return of the dead depends on moral conduct. This study reviews ethnography of aboriginal Australians, Amerindians of the Northwest Coast, Trobriand Islanders, and West Africans; ancient Greece and Rome; and Hinduism and Buddhism in India and Bali. Obeyesekere looks for how theories of rebirth confront theories of karma in these societies. He creates four concepts to study variations on this confrontation. Theories of rebirth are grounded in "species sentience" (first concept), which is the primordial assumption that "animate existence constitutes a single order held together by common sentience, both physical and spiritual." (45). The universal fact of human wrongdoing everywhere confronts species sentience, resulting in the "ethicization" (second concept) of rebirth. Ethicization means that "putting soul-possessing human beings at the center of creation erodes the idea of animal rebirth and subverts any prior doctrine of species sentience." (318) Ethics, introduced into rebirth eschatology, must transform it into karmic eschatology. The complication of species sentience by ethicization makes for continuous debates in native societies. These debates change the religion by "conceptualism" (third concept), which means that "once a new concept has been developed, it must loop back into earlier concepts and infuse them with further meaning and significance." (129) Debaters practice "axiologization" (fourth concept): "deliberate and self-conscious transfiguring of local, preexisting, or contending values...gives [these values] deeper ethical and symbolic significance, often universal, even cosmic in scope." (174). His scholarly writing treats the ethnographic data in minute detail and is comprehensive about the literature. Written for anthropologists, the style is often precious. For examples, chapter 7 is entitled, "Imprisoning frames and open debates." People who are not used to exquisite references to extinct and scholarly writings in academic seminars will be impatient, but the portrayal of the evolution of primitive, archaic, and historic religions is very satisfying.

This is a great book by a great scholar who has pulled together various strands of different studies from historical texts to modern anthropology to try to come to understand where the notion of rebirth came from and what transformations are needed to create it into the classic karma/rebirth eschatology that is central to Indian religious thought.

It is a scholarly book and is recommended for those interested in Buddhism and the origins of kamma and rebirth.

the rise of a "caste system" in the US

The authors strongly couch their presentation as attesting to the rise of a caste system in the United States. Where the caste consists of the chronically ill, infirm and marginally employed. Several members of this group are interviewed. In the MidWest, Mississipi and other regions.

A common symptom is a death spiral, whereby working class individuals, who might indeed have worked very hard, but then suffered injuries, fall into a feedback loop. Where they can barely afford health case. Except for emergency room admissions. A cruel paradox.

The book goes into how the stress of poverty and being ill can feed into and reinforce each other.

Another ironic aspect shown is how caregivers can often lack health insurance. A bitter scenario that is all too common.

This is not a work of fiction, it is horrifyingly real and it will keep you up at night unable to put the book down. Each chapter contains real-life situations that people across the country face as they struggle to survive without health insurance. These are facts you think can only happen to "other" people, but these others are looking more and more like us. Somehow, their lives still remain hidden from the general public, but this book deserves to be discussed on 60 minutes to make people aware of what is happening in our country. This book terrified me more than any horror novel ever could, because it could happen to any one of us at any time.

The Death Spiral Of Persons Who Lack Health Insurance

40,000,000 - 50,000,000 Americans have no health insurance and another group of Americans of equal size are underinsured. Americans have to choose between food and medicine. Americans live in a land of opportunity until they have a challenge to their health. If you have a challenge to your health and if you do not have the best private health insurance you will enter a death spiral as the change in your health will drain away your money and your hope. It is a sad day - only in America, the land of no national health insurance.

At her most compelling, Jablonski demonstrates that our hairlessness didn't evolve after humans adopted clothing or because our distant hominid relatives splashed through an aquatic phase like dolphins and whales; rather, it's inextricably linked to our abundance of sweat glands. Similarly intriguing are the notions that indigenous people of the hot tropics are tall and lean because mammals with a high ratio of skin surface area to body weight keep cool in intense heat, and that women have lighter skin color than men because females need to maximize vitamin D production during pregnancy and breastfeeding. stimulating, insightful book

Jablonski's book is well written, well informed, and a deeply insightful discussion of one of our least appreciated, but most important organs. She deftly, gently guides the reader through some basic scientific principles governing the functioning of the skin, and provides compelling explanations of such topics as the role of pigmentation in evolution. She also highlights the role of skin in human culture through such practices as tattooing and scarification. I have some research interests in the topic of the book, and it repays careful study. At the same time, though, Jablonski is such a fine writer, and her explanations are so clear, that I'd have no worries about giving the book as a gift to non-academic friends who are just curious about this amazing organ. (Warning: After reading this book, you'll probably never again want to sit out in the sun tanning yourself, at least without slathering on the sunscreen first!)

An informed and informative addition

Enhanced with the inclusion of 14 color photographs, 2 color maps, 36 black/white photographs, and 13 line drawn illustrations, "Skin: A Natural History" by Nina G. Jablonski (Head of the Department of Anthropology at The California Academy of Sciences) is a thoroughly "reader friendly" and scholarly introduction to the biological and cultural functions of human skin. "Skin" addresses such questions and issues as how and when human skin came to look, fell, and function as we know it today; why we turn pale when anxious but red when we are embarrassed or angry; why touch is one of the fundamentally important senses of the body and relates to every aspect of human life; what is the real purpose of fingerprints; skin as a canvas for self-expression; the effects of aging, environmental stress, insect bites, burns, and diseases upon skin; advancing medical technologies relevant to skin issues, and so much more. Surveying more than 300-million-years of evolutionary development as it relates to the skin of homo sapiens, "Skin" addresses the critical role skin plays in human health (including processing sunlight for Vitamin D), the role of melanin in protecting us from the sun's rays, and the advances toward to the creation of artificial skin, gene therapies, reversing the aging process of skin, and other fascinating issues related to our skin. "Skin: A Natural History" is an informed and informative addition to medical school, academic library, and Anthropological Studies collections, as well as a very highly recommended study for non-specialist general readers with an interest in the biology and sociology of skin issues.

Looking Deeper

"It isn't good to take for granted something as important as skin," writes Nina G. Jablonski in _Skin: A Natural History_ (University of California Press). Whatever risk you have of taking skin for granted, Jablonski isn't likely to do so. She is a professor of anthropology, and her research has been done on different aspects of skin, especially skin color. She describes her new book as "not a systematic treatise or a manual, but more an idiosyncratic guidebook, replete with personal detours into topics about skin that have most engaged me in my work over the years." Engaged is a good word; she clearly loves her subject, and succeeds in communicating her enthusiasm. Skin itself is of undoubted importance. It is the largest of our organs (just because it is your outer covering and not an inner mound of tissue like your liver doesn't keep it from being a unified organ). It is, unlike the skin of most animals, basically naked, with not very much hair and no scales or feathers. Like any of our other organs, it is a product of evolution that has its current properties because it has done a good job: "Our fabric doesn't wear out, our seams don't burst, we don't spontaneously sprout leaks, and we don't expand like water balloons when we sit in the bathtub." Jablonski is right that we take skin too much for granted, and her book is a happy corrective.

In a phrase that has been made famous by pop anthropology, we are "naked apes," but the reason for our hairlessness (at least compared to our primate cousins) has been disputed. Jablonski discusses the best explanation for our not having hair is that we sweat, sweating, of course, being an important function of our skin. As we developed sweating as our cooling system, we lost fur, because sweating into fur is inefficient; the cooling of a body covered with wet fur would occur at the outermost layer of fur but not at the skin so that the body itself could get cool. Jablonski has splendid chapters on skin color, the superficial characteristic on which so much history and sadness has been based. Melanin has become the governor that mediates between the opposing goals of protection from ultraviolet radiation versus synthesis of vitamin D. Humans have by now turned the "natural" and geographic order of skin color into a relative chaos because of the speedy travel that we have been able to accomplish only in the last few centuries, but the play of skin colors originally evolved on strictly geographic lines because skin molecules were being juggled as key mediators of our ability to be out in the sun. Skin colors represent evolution at work in dermatological molecules, and do not have deeper significance. With our tendency to judge and group based on superficialities, skin colors carry a lot more meaning, but not in any biological sense.

Jablonski winds up her tour with thoughts about the future of skin. Oh, sure, we will always have skin, but perhaps robots will, too; our skin helps us in measuring tasks as delicate as lending an arm for support to another or turning a doorknob, and artificial skin for robots may do such things, and perhaps even help robots start making the me / not me distinction that is essential for consciousness. If that sounds too far fetched, then consider tattoos of the future that will be essentially permanent until the wearer wants to be rid of them, and does so by shining a light of a single wavelength upon them, breaking down the dye. And if that sounds too frivolous, consider the possibility that burn patients might have a spray put on their wounds consisting of cultures of their own cells, all the many types of cells found in the skin; such a preparation would enable new and natural skin rapidly to regenerate. The speculation is fun, but Jablonski's history of the evolution of skin and the many functions it accomplishes for us brings a complicated topic into deep and appealing focus.

An essential book for the serious musician

Maynard Solomon is probably the most important Beethoven biographer of modern times. His book is essential research for serious musicians and composers who wish to gain insight into late Beethoven. Solomon's writing is dense; every word and paragraph count. Many, many musical examples, so the ability to read music (and knowledge of music theory) is a must. This is not a casual book, but if you are up for it, it is among the most rewarding Beethoven studies around.

Solomon on Late Beethoven

The following review was written and posted in February, 2004 on the hardback edition of this title. I was unaware that the paperback was separately listed and that the review did not appear under the paperback edition. Thus, I am posting the review again here.

Maynard Solomon has followed-up his distinguished biography of Beethoven (rev.ed. 1998)with an outstanding study of the music of Beethoven's third period and of the intellectual and emotional changes in Beethoven's outlook that likely contributed to Beethoven's late masterworks. These works include the Ninth Symphony, the Missa Solemnis, the Diabelli Variations, the final string quartets, including the great fugue, and the final five piano sonatas.

Solomon's biography of Beethoven was both notable and controversial for its psychoanalytical approach. I find that approach mostly lacking here. For his approach to Beethoven's inner life and development, Solomon draws extensively on Beethoven's Tagebuch, which Solomon describes as "the intimate diary [Beethoven] kept between 1812 and 1818 to which he confided his inmost feelings and desires" (p.2). Solomon finds a "sea change" (as he titles his Prologue) in Beethoven's system of belief beginning in about 1810. Following Beethoven's comparatively fallow period as a composer between 1812-1816, this change in Beethoven's beliefs bore its consequences in the works of his final maturity. In general, Solomon finds Beethoven's beliefs changed from the rational, enlightenment, classical thought that characterized, for Solomon, the first and second period works, to a more romantic belief system that focused on inwardness, theology, (I found it fascinating that Beethoven showed awareness of and interest in Eastern thought in the Tagebuch), nature, and imagination. In sum, Beethoven in his final period came more under the influence of romanticism (whatever that notoriously vague term might mean) than is sometimes realized. Furthermore, with his nearly total deafness and the failure of his attempts to establish a lasting relationship with a woman, Beethoven tried mightily to devote his life to the pursuit of his art rather than to his own personal, less exalted ends.

The book consists of twelve chapters, some of which were earlier published, which Solomon has worked into a coherent whole. Of the twelve chapters, seven are examinations of the sources of Beethoven's thought and deal in broad concepts. Thus two chapters explore the relationship between concepts of classicism and romanticism -- highly slippery concepts as Solomon realizes-- and argue that Beethoven's final work and thought show an increased romantic influence -- particularly in its transcendent element. Two chapters discuss the possible influence of Freemasonry upon Beethoven while an additional chapter discusses the increased religious dimension in Beethoven's final works, including the influence of Eastern thought.

The remaining five chapters focus on individual works. The Diabelli Variations receives two detailed chapters. The first chapter explores Diabelli's waltz theme and the attraction it might have had for Beethoven while the second chapter is a detailed analysis of the pattern of each of the 33 variations, including copious musical illustrations. There is an outstanding chapter on Beethoven's opus 96 violin sonata and its source in pastorale. There is a chapter on the seventh symphony (not usually considered a late work) and on the influence it shows of Greek poetical meters, and a thorough chapter on the Ninth Symphony. This description only briefly touches the scope of the book as Solomon has provocative things to say about the last quartets, particularly on the opus 130 quartet and on the question of its two finales: the grosse fugue and the much simpler rondo which Beethoven substituted for it. And, as I mentioned, Solomon says much about the last piano sonatas, the Missa Solemnis and about the song cycle "An die Ferne Geliebte" even though these works do not have a specific chapter devoted to them.

I found it a joy to read this book. It combines a love and emotional understanding of Beethoven's music with deep erudition and a love of learning. Beethoven's music and intellectual development are well-discussed even if the reader finds himself not agreeing with all Solomon's arguments. The book is full of detailed consideration of specific works including quotations from Beethoven's scores. It is probably a book that will be most appreciated by those who have some familiarity with Beethoven's music, particularly the works of the third period, rather than by those coming to the music for the first time.

This is a difficult, challenging, and revealing study of late Beethoven combining scholarship, philosophical thinking, and a love and understanding of Beethoven's music.

Heavy on Imagination, light on music

It should be made clear that this book is more about Beethoven's philosophy, than about his music. There are two chapters devoted entirely to his relationship with Free Masonry, a good few chapters of rather speculative interpretation of the Diabelli Variations, and very little on the late quartets (what little there is remains characteristically speculative.)

David Pierpont Gardner was president of one of the world's most distinguished centers of higher learning—the nine-campus University of California—from 1983 to 1992. Before his tenure as president, Gardner spent seven years at the University of California, Santa Barbara, during a tumultuous era of culture wars, ethnic division, and anti–Vietnam War protests, leaving his post as vice chancellor to serve as vice president of the University of California from 1971 to 1973. In 1973 he was named president of the University of Utah, and while there he chaired the National Commission on Excellence in High Education, which authored A Nation at Risk, regarded today as the twentieth century's most telling report on the condition of American public schools. As president of the University of California, he contended with intense controversies over affirmative action, animal rights, AIDS research, weapons labs, divestment in South Africa, and much more. This memoir recounts his experiences with these and other issues and describes his dealings with the diverse cast of characters who influence the university: U.S. presidents, governors, legislators, regents, chancellors, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors. The epilogue of Earning My Degree is a thoughtful and engaging account of the ten years since Gardner's retirement that includes his personal views about what has truly mattered in his life.
