Circe Sturm takes a bold and original approach to one of the most highly charged and important issues in the United States today: race and national identity. Focusing on the Oklahoma Cherokee, she examines how Cherokee identity is socially and politically constructed, and how that process is embedded in ideas of blood, color, and race. Not quite a century ago, blood degree varied among Cherokee citizens from full blood to 1/256, but today the range is far greater--from full blood to 1/2048. This trend raises questions about the symbolic significance of blood and the degree to which blood connections can stretch and still carry a sense of legitimacy. It also raises questions about how much racial blending can occur before Cherokees cease to be identified as a distinct people and what danger is posed to Cherokee sovereignty if the federal government continues to identify Cherokees and other Native Americans on a racial basis. Combining contemporary ethnography and ethnohistory, Sturm's sophisticated and insightful analysis probes the intersection of race and national identity, the process of nation formation, and the dangers in linking racial and national identities.

An Enlightening Examination

Circe Sturm's "Blood Politics" is a thoughtful look at the factors which go into how the Cherokee people define themselves- as Cherokees, as Indians, as citizens of the Cherokee Nation. Sturm takes on some controversial issues that remain hotbeds of political contention. Particularly on the subject of freedmen, Sturm captures a wide variety of thought.

She is a skilled writer and anthropologist. Some of her writing in her opening was difficult for me to grasp, but this is my fault- not hers. I have a limited background in anthropology, and I am still trying to get my head around the notions of "contradictory consciousness" and "counterhegemonic resistance." Apparently these are standard terms in the academic world of anthropology, but I had to rely on Sturm to point out examples of them in Cherokee culture.

Even if one does not completely follow "Neo-Gramscian Perspectives on Race and Resistance" (a subtitle in her opening), overall the book is easily readable and understandable for the lay person. I came away with a much broader understanding of the concept and power of blood and blood quantum in Cherokee heritage. I also have a better understanding of Cherokee religion, politics, language and social structure.

Sturm includes some stories of her research told in the third person. When she does this, the book reads more like a novel, and I found it to be an entertaining and useful technique in making her point. "Blood Politics" is highly recommended, particularly in light of the recent vote on the status of freedmen in the Cherokee Nation.

Tackling a Sticky Subject

Sturm provides thought-provoking insights into tribal indentity and shows how the idea of "race" changes and evolves over time. A variety of perspectives, sometimes quite humorous, into the obsession of blood quantum. Her stories throughout the book are welcome breaks from the sometimes stuffy academic writing. I think she neglects to mention that government documentatin of people's blood quantum is arbitrary and often incorrect, usually placing people's blood quantum lower than it actually is. Sturm also seems inexplicably harsh on the Cherokee Nation and in particular Ross Swimmer. Other than these complaints, this book is a great exploration of varying viewpoints.

Not enough research -- too much from already written info

This work has two central themes and limited Cherokee history: (1) enrollees with more than 1/64th blood quantum, (author calls them White Cherokees), and (2) the lack of acceptance of Black Freedmen into the tribe.
There is no mention of blood quantum needed for Cherokee tribal services.
I am offended the author considers my 1/28th blood quantum "a card carrying Cherokee". Really?
Writer assumes the blood quantum in the Dawes Roll is correct -- again, Really?
It was a White world, is it not possible that some Indian people admitted only to
the amount of blood that would allow them land or compensation?
My mother, the 2nd of 8 siblings was raised on my Cherokee grandfather's allotment close to Park Hill.
During the war days we spent every other weekend on this farm.
THE ORIGINAL ALLOTMENT, dated 1906, IS STILL IN OUR FAMILY.
I also have wonderful photos of my Cherokee ancestors, including the gggrandmother who came to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears.
Also, I, along with my mother and all her siblings and my cousins have inherited type 2 diabetes. Yuck.
I'm slender, eat heathy, and have always been athletic -- where did this illness come from -- there is no history in my paternal family anywhere --
it comes from my 1/28th Cherokee ancestry.
All this and a thesis writer thinks I'm "a card carrying
Cherokee"?
I am very proud to call myself Cherokee.

Alexander is Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Sociology Department at Yale University, the author of The Meanings of Social Life: A Cultural Sociology (2003), and the editor of Real Civil Societies (1998). A fair approach to an important issue

I acknowledge, that Alexander and his colleagues raise the topic of the growing importance of trauma in our societies. Being a German myself I totally agree to the importance of the task. Furthermore I appreciate the normative dimension of Alexander's work. I think it is great, that Alexander does not only theorize trauma but tries to show us a way towards responsibility and solidarity.
However great his claims I cannot accept Alexander's theory. There is a great critique by Hans Joas in the European Journal of Social Theory. I do not want to repeat this critique here. I could not formulate it any better nor shorter, so please have a look at it yourself.
Yet I want to give a short outline of what I think Alexander's fallacy is: Orthodox Theories conceptualize trauma as an experience that cannot be grasped and integrated into our understanding of the world. Therefore this experience disturbs, injures and haunts us. Alexander criticizes these approaches by saying, that it is not the events but their meaning, which shock and frighten us. These meanings of course have to be mediated and constructed first. I think with this critique he gets it all wrong.
The basic characteristic of a trauma is, that it has no meaning within our every day lives!
Therefore it cannot be understood nor talked about. This incoherency between horrible experience and normal every-day-life causes anxiety, phobia and so on and so forth. First it was recognized that homecoming soldiers had mental and physical problems. Then it was thought about an explanation and scientists came up with ideas like "shelter shock" or "post traumatic depression". If Alexander was right, we first would need the definition and then people would show the symptoms.
Am I confusing the individual and the collective level? Then let me ask the following question: Did it really need the experience of a failed emancipation and reconstitution for African Americans to be traumatized by slavery? (see Eyermans chapter)
What Alexander calls the "Trauma Process" does not establish the trauma but its cure and its cultural memory. The "Trauma Process" makes it possible for people to integrate their experiences into their everyday life.
The field of trauma research is too well established to just revolutionize it with one such book by people who have not worked in this area before.
As Joas sais, Alexander fails to differentiate between cultural and personal trauma. If such a differentiation was introduced, the cultural trauma could be acknowledged as a special case of a cultural memory, which might even help to cure (collectivities of) personal traumatized people.

A inspirational book for anyone interested in exploring collective trauma as a social phenomenon

We are entering the "trauma age," and this book is a major contribution to our understanding of how and why certain events became the rally point for identity formation for different social/ethnic groups or national communities. I like the way in which authors employ some of the psychoanalytical concepts to sociology. This is despite their criticism of the dominant psychoanalysis model which considers trauma as an individual experience, and an unspeakable one.

Beautifully designed overview of salmon and their plight

This book is beautifully illustrated with photographs, illustrations, and the most detailed distribution maps I have ever seen. The design of the book makes it a perfect coffee top book and it's content makes it both a perfect introduction to the world of salmon while at the same time a valuable scientific reference.

This book is very accessible to non-scientists, if you are looking for a book about how salmon, man, and the enviroment interact this is a great book. The title sounds a little academic but it can be appreciated by anyone with interest in salmon. And anyone who flips through the book will be taken in by the beauty of this book.

The Atlas of Pacific Salmon is what all universities and government agencies needed 20 years ago. I dare say, it was almost worth the wait. This is a splensid compilation of data and images. The map work in this volume deserves much praise. The content covers biogeography, biology, genetics, threats, status etc....

Groundbreaking in 2005, Still Highly Relevant Today

Xanthippe Augerot’s Atlas of Pacific Salmon provides dozens of maps depicting numerous aspects of Pacific salmon throughout their natural range. The text is well and is further supported by excellent charts, graphs and photographs. A truly incredible amount of information is packed into 120 pages. An additional 23 pages of references and footnotes plus a user-friendly index add to this book’s usefulness as a source for further exploration of given topics.

Seven species of genus Oncorhynchus are treated: Masu (Cherry Salmon), Steelhead, Pink, Chum, Sockeye, Coho and Chinook. Although all (or virtually all) areas historically inhabited by Pacific salmon are touched on, the maps and text chiefly focus on Japan, China, Russia, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. The book is divided into six chapters: The Fish, The People, The Place, Distribution and Risk of Extinction, Threats to Biodiversity and Migration. Atlas of Pacific Salmon will be appreciated by anyone with a deep interest in Pacific Salmon, their impact on human cultures and economies, their place in the ecosystem and their conservation.

Unschuld’s survey of the contents includes illuminating discussions of the yin-yang and five-agents doctrines, the perception of the human body and its organs, qi and blood, pathogenic agents, concepts of disease and diagnosis, and a variety of therapies, including the new technique of acupuncture. An extensive appendix, furthermore, offers a detailed introduction to the complicated climatological theories of Wu yun liu qi ("five periods and six qi"), which were added to the Su wen by Wang Bing in the Tang era.

In an epilogue, Unschuld writes about the break with tradition and innovative style of thought represented by the Su wen. For the first time, health care took the form of "medicine," in that it focused on environmental conditions, climatic agents, and behavior as causal in the emergence of disease and on the importance of natural laws in explaining illness. Unschuld points out that much of what we surmise about the human organism is simply a projection, reflecting dominant values and social goals, and he constructs a hypothesis to explain the formation and acceptance of basic notions of health and disease in a given society. Reading the Su wen, he says, not only offers a better understanding of the roots of Chinese medicine as an integrated aspect of Chinese civilization; it also provides a much needed starting point for discussions of the differences and parallels between European and Chinese ways of dealing with illness and the risk of early death.

An important resource on the history of Chinese medicine

An important scholarly review of a milestone medical classic, Professor Unschuld is his usual through self in presenting this material with copious references to support his conclusions. The acutal translation of the Su Wen is to follow in three volumes, this book reviews sources and cultural influences that helped shape the Su Wen. Considering the complex nature of the material in that work, this book is invaluable to the understanding of the Su Wen itself.
While not a book for the general public looking for lay information on Chinese medicine, this is a must read for those interested in the history of medicine, Chinese culture, and the influence prevailing cultural paradigms can have on even medical thought. Students and practitioners of Chinese medicine should also find this book valuable as there is so little documented information on the roots of this rapidly growing healing tradition.
I would also like to add that I do not believe Unschuld set out to do a hatchet job on holistic concepts as one reviewer seemed to think. I am a supporter of such concepts and do not always agree with everything Unschuld concludes. I feel however, that although one may disagree with some of his conclusions, one cannot argue with the scholarly rigor with which he supports those conclusions. This is a great book for the right audiance and will undoubtedly stand as a valuable reference for years to come.

We need more scholarly books like this

Unschuld is thorough and thought-provoking. I will read the Suwen a little differently now, after reading Unschuld's book.
I don't agree with every conclusion the author makes, but I love mulling over the issues he brings up.
Yes, this book is scholarly, and you may need a dictionary here and there. But is that a bad thing?
It is not for someone who just wants to practice in blissful ignorance. It is not for a beginning student. It is not for someone who wants to mystify Chinese medicine.
It is for those who want to find deeper ways of looking at our medicine, and for those who like a little challenge to their own way of thinking. I will happily pre-order any book Unschuld writes.

Researching the Origins

Mr. Iannone is free to dislike any book or any author, and to say so. However, his review so misrepresents the "Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen: Nature, Knowledge, Imagery in an Ancient Chinese Medical Text" that it demands a response. Mr. Iannone's description of this excellent text is so far from the facts and purposes of the text that readers who had not seen the text could not know its content, or understand its intent. We learn what Mr. Iannone thinks but nearly nothing of the book itself.
It is critical to note that Dr. Unschuld scoffs at nothing. Dr. Unschuld apparently fails to treat the theme of "holistic" Chinese medicine with the hands-off reverence Mr. Iannone apparently demands. But this is Mr. Iannone's ax to grind and scoffing at holism is neither Dr. Unchuld's theme nor a fair description of the text. Chinese medicine evolved to serve the universal desire for a long and happy life not to answer the fragmentation of modern life the philosophy of holism attempts to address. To accuse Dr. Unschuld of scoffing at his sources is no different than accusing the ancient Chinese of failing to satisfy the needs of a time and place they could not have imagined. Not only were the social and philosophical milieu to which holism responds two millenia in the future but China in the era of the "Huang Di Nei Jing" had its own philosophies and these, Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism, are the philosophical currents Dr. Unschuld's research considers, not because he scoffs at holism, but because these were the concerns of the culture from which the "Huang Di Nei Jing" derives.
While Mr. Iannone clearly feels that some darling of his own desire has been abused, that is again Mr. Iannone's response, not a description of the text. Indeed, perhaps the most considerable disservice in Mr. Iannone's review is the impression it gives readers that Dr. Unschuld's "Huang Di Nei Jing" is merely an opinion piece, not more than a viewpoint. It is not. It is the result of the largest East-West scholarly enterprise ever undertaken; it is the result of the largest collection of artifacts and textual references ever assembled in regard to a seminal Chinese text. It is the result of expertise drawn from many sources, many scholars and disciplines. The text does indeed point-out contradictions within the corpus of the surviving text but these are described as windows into the creation of an as-yet unfinished human enterprise, not the debunking of a philosophy of the distant future.
The "full text" (as if ancient documents were books to be pulled from a shelf) is not present, not as Mr. Iannone implies, to hide some holistic gem, but because this is the introductory volume, the preface if you will, of a multi-volume series that will include, not only textual sources but concordances, indexes and further commentaries. What the review hides from the reader is that direct quotations of the sources are plentiful, well-referenced and perfectly directed to the themes discussed.

Advanced book for specialists

This is an advanced book, with plenty of black and white photos, but no color photos. This book consists of fifteen review chapters written by established experts and new contributors. The book description states that Cacti: Biology and Uses is the first book of its kind to compile information on cactus biology, ecology and uses.
Because this book covers a wide variety of topics, such as biology, morphology, conservation, pollination, and pest control, the writing is quite advanced in several different subject areas. For example, a physiologist may totally understand the chapter on shoot anatomy and morphology (Chapter 2), but may have less understanding of the chapter about breeding and biotechnology (Chapter 15). In Chapter 10 alone (Cactus Pear Fruit Production) a reader finds economic content with a supply and demand analysis and agronomic content with fertilizer and irrigation information. This seems to validate the book's description as a compilation of cacti information.
As previously mentioned, Cacti: Biology and Uses does not have any color photos, but it does have many, quality black and white photos, as well as many tables and figures. A basic table of contents is printed in the front, and then, each chapter begins with a more detailed table of contents. Each chapter ends with a conclusion and an extensive list of literature cited. An index, with some "See" and "See also" references, is provided in the back.
This is a high quality book who are interested in the biology, ecology or uses of a unique family of plants.

Good Book

It's a good book. Great information of cacti, how they grow, ect. Also has a great practical uses section. Some of the language in the first seven chapters or so is a bit technical for non-botanist folk (like me!)- but with a little bit of work the book is very understandable. Overall the book provides a great view of where Cacti stand as an edible food crop on both local and world wide scales, and presents some of the difficulties with marketing this drought resistant (yet tasty) crop. For anyone interested in sustainable agriculture in the Southwest or desert countries it is a great source of background information.

get it used

This book was used as a text for a seminar, and we all agreed that it was a fine example of pulling together scholarship on the topic (though some topics, for example dental analysis, made use of extremely outdated references). The book is way, way, way overpriced - more and better graphics may have legitimated the price. Get it used.

About the Author
Patrick McGilligan, who teaches film at Marquette University, edited the three previous Backstory volumes, all published by the University of California Press. He is author of the Edgar-nominated Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light (2003), Clint: The Life and Legend (2002), and many other books about film, including George Cukor: A Double Life (1991) and Fritz Lang: The Nature of the Beast (1997), both New York Times Notable Books.

Informative and Amusing Reading for Film Freaks

If you're at all interested in the way films actually get written and produced, this is an invaluable-- and very entertaining-- resource. I picked this up to read the interview with Donald E. Westlake, one of my favorite authors. I ended up reading the whole thing in a few hours. The fun of this is to see what screenwriters think of the films that have been made from their work, and how many of their products have actually made it to the finish line (surprisingly few). These artists know how Hollywood works, how hard it is to push through a script to completion, and how maddening the process can be.

Many of these screenwriters are also directors-- Walter Hill and Robert Benton and Larry Cohen tell about their mostly low-budget beginnings in fascinating interviews. Their work habits, their inspirations, their grudges and triumphs-- it all makes for great reading.
