John Donne's Sermons on the Psalms and Gospels: With a Selection of Prayers and Meditations, by John Donne

The glory of John Donne's prose at its best is very different from that of his verse, but is equal to it; and there can be no question that his best prose is in his sermons. His sense of form and arrangement, his psychological insight, his differences of mood and emphasis, and his religious fervor will make this selection of ten sermons particularly interesting to the attentive reader familiar with Donne's poetry.

An Unforgettable Spiritual Classic!
By Christiana Washington
John Donne's poetic words pierce the heart and ignite the imagination. He speaks food for the soul, not just the heart. I have read and re-read his books for many years and cannot tell how deeply they have moved me and inspired me to be a better Christian. He was a profound writer, almost mystical and yet so very down to earth. A beautiful book that should not be missed by anyone interested in the life of faith.

Proof through the Night: Music and the Great War (Includes CD), by Glenn Watkins

Carols floating across no-man's-land on Christmas Eve 1914; solemn choruses, marches, and popular songs responding to the call of propaganda ministries and war charities; opera, keyboard suites, ragtime, and concertos for the left hand—all provided testimony to the unique power of music to chronicle the Great War and to memorialize its battles and fallen heroes in the first post-Armistice decade. In this striking book, Glenn Watkins investigates these variable roles of music primarily from the angle of the Entente nations' perceived threat of German hegemony in matters of intellectual and artistic accomplishment—a principal concern not only for Europe but also for the United States, whose late entrance into the fray prompted a renewed interest in defining America as an emergent world power as well as a fledgling musical culture. He shows that each nation gave "proof through the night"—ringing evidence during the dark hours of the war—not only of its nationalist resolve in the singing of national airs but also of its power to recall home and hearth on distant battlefields and to reflect upon loss long after the guns had been silenced.

Watkins's eloquent narrative argues that twentieth-century Modernism was not launched full force with the advent of the Great War but rather was challenged by a new set of alternatives to the prewar avant-garde. His central focus on music as a cultural marker during the First World War of necessity exposes its relationship to the other arts, national institutions, and international politics. From wartime scores by Debussy and Stravinsky to telling retrospective works by Berg, Ravel, and Britten; from "La Marseillaise" to "The Star-Spangled Banner," from "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" to "Over There," music reflected society's profoundest doubts and aspirations. By turns it challenged or supported the legitimacy of war, chronicled misgivings in miniature and grandiose formats alike, and inevitably expressed its sorrow at the final price exacted by the Great War. Proof through the Night concludes with a consideration of the post-Armistice period when, on the classical music front, memory and distance forged a musical response that was frequently more powerful than in wartime.

Review
"a brilliant history of musical ideas publicly and privately formulated through the first two decades of the 20th century . . . the discipline of musicology is enormously enriched by this wonderful synthesis of social history, perceptive musical analysis and cultural critique."--"Irish Times

From the Inside Flap
"[T]he contribution Watkins has made is so varied and robust that any social or cultural historian of the Great War simply cannot afford to do without it. Of how many of our colleagues’ work can we say the same?"—Jay Winter, Yale University

"The cover of Glenn Watkins’ book Proof through the Night: Music and the Great War shows an astonishing Stravinsky manuscript of an innocent march ambushed by the composer’s own Futurist-inspired paintings of exploding cannons – a perfect symbol for the book’s ground-breaking, earthshaking account of the varied and surprising roles that music played during the First World War. The first musician ever to speak to the international conference of World War I scholars at the Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne, France, Glenn Watkins once again leads the way in interdisciplinary cultural studies, weaving together the music, art, and socio-political histories of the early 20th century into a truly meaningful picture of the human condition in a time of international crisis. Glenn Watkins’ lectures on Music and the Great War, given at New York’s Lincoln Center in preparation for this volume, gave fair warning of an imminent attack on the idea of history as battle maneuvers without considering vital questions of culture. Only a lifetime of intellectual passion and rigorous, relentless scholarship could produce such a book."—Bruce Adolphe, composer and lecturer, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

"Music and History intersect magnificently in the scholarship of Glenn Watkins. Politics, nationalism, combat, technology, art, literature and, above all, the sounds - beautiful and horrible - that charged wartime life and accompanied mass death. All these, and more, suffuse the vast symphony of war that Professor Watkins presents so clearly and analyzes so convincingly. Proof Through the Night is a master's work of interdisciplinary, yet disciplined, writing about music."—David B. Dennis, author of Beethoven in German Politics, 1870-1989

"Glenn Watkins’s new book is a synthesis of biographical, music-analytical, literary, political, and historical information about European and American music between 1914 and 1918. He combines extremely diverse materials into a single story, by turns fascinating, entertaining, and sad . The book will be a rich source of information and judgments about music and culture in general at a crucial moment of modern history."—John Spitzer, Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins University

"[Watkins's] narrative is vivid and enthralling, as it could hardly fail to be, and I suspect that even seasoned cultural historians specialising in this period will learn new things from Watkins's supremely well-managed synthesis. His background research and reading have reached into the furthest corners: very little of any possible relevance is missed."—Arnold Whittall

A Six Star (******) Triumph of Cultural History
By Craig Matteson
There was a period a few years ago when bestseller lists contained more than an occasional book on the First World War. For example, the John Keegan book was a concise military history recounting the politics and battlefield actions of the war. Niall Ferguson's "The Pity of War" set out to explain WWI and offers an iconoclastic view that attempts to show how it was not inevitable. What these and the others really do lack is a sense of the cultures that were torn apart, reshaped and died.
As I was reading "Proof Through The Night" I was shocked how vividly Professor Watkins evokes the cultural issues of the times leading up to the War, the convulsions during the War, and the cultural memory and recounting of these events that echo even today. Most of us know little of that time and we don't understand the roots of present issues. We see the surfaces and strange interactions. We see artifacts from the past, but do not understand their context and react all too anachronistically to them. While we are entitled to reinterpret the past and use what we will and how we wish to use it, there is so much to be gained by at least making an attempt to come to terms with what those who lived meant to say to each other and to us by inheritance. We cheat ourselves of our patrimony by only shallowly understanding the culture of a time.
Professor Watkins surveys cultural issues that were active in Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany - Austria, and the U. S. neighboring to the war years. He does this by demonstrating what was happening in painting, sculpture, drama, popular culture, and above all, music. He takes us deep inside a few pieces such as Ravel's "Tombeau de Couperin"(particularly the Toccata), certain paintings of Otto Dix and the music of Hindemith to the work of Matthias Gruenewald, and Britten's "War Requiem" to the resolution and memory of the Great War even in 1961.
There is so much in this wonderful book that I cannot even begin to list more than a few incidental points. I really do want you to get a copy and immerse yourself in it. Professor Watkins has provided us with so much that I found I had to take my time and read other things to get more background to get full enjoyment from this treasure.
There is a CD that contains 17 tracks of some of the most important pieces he refers to in the book. They are chosen well and you will never hear them the same after reading the deep context this book provides. There are also many wonderful pictures and illustrations in the book. The only wish I have is that at least some of them could have been in color. But you know how it is with "academic" books.
There are also many pages of footnotes (endnotes). Nowadays most footnotes are simply citations of references. Not here. There is a great deal of valuable and enlightening information on these pages and I encourage you to read them.
This book should not be ignored. I believe reading about the culture and the wrenching changes during and after the War will actually tell you more about your life today and its connection to that time than a shelf full of books on battlefield struggles, troop movements, and weapons development. It isn't the usual way to read about War, but it is terrific.
Everyone - at least everyone who cares about WWI- should read this book.

The $800 Million Pill: The Truth behind the Cost of New Drugs, by Merrill Goozner

Why do life-saving prescription drugs cost so much? Drug companies insist that prices reflect the millions they invest in research and development. In this gripping exposé, Merrill Goozner contends that American taxpayers are in fact footing the bill twice: once by supporting government-funded research and again by paying astronomically high prices for prescription drugs. Goozner demonstrates that almost all the important new drugs of the past quarter-century actually originated from research at taxpayer-funded universities and at the National Institutes of Health. He reports that once the innovative work is over, the pharmaceutical industry often steps in to reap the profit.

Goozner shows how drug innovation is driven by dedicated scientists intent on finding cures for diseases, not by pharmaceutical firms whose bottom line often takes precedence over the advance of medicine. A university biochemist who spent twenty years searching for a single blood protein that later became the best-selling biotech drug in the world, a government employee who discovered the causes for dozens of crippling genetic disorders, and the Department of Energy-funded research that made the Human Genome Project possible--these engrossing accounts illustrate how medical breakthroughs actually take place.

The $800 Million Pill suggests ways that the government's role in testing new medicines could be expanded to eliminate the private sector waste driving up the cost of existing drugs. Pharmaceutical firms should be compelled to refocus their human and financial resources on true medical innovation, Goozner insists. This book is essential reading for everyone concerned about the politically charged topics of drug pricing, Medicare coverage, national health care, and the role of pharmaceutical companies in developing countries.

From Publishers Weekly
In this fascinating critical look at drug and biotech companies, Goozner pulls back the curtain on the process of new drug development and answers two important questions: "where do new drugs come from?" and "what do they cost to invent?" Using case studies that recount the discovery, development and eventual commercialization of a number of significant drugs, including Epogen and the AIDS cocktail, Goozner dismantles the pharmaceutical industry’s assertion that drug prices must be kept high in order to stimulate cutting edge research. The cost of each new discovery averages $800 million, industry officials have claimed. But Goozner argues that citizens are already paying much of that bill: taxpayer-financed medical research, he finds, has played a major role in each important medical discovery. Goozner convincingly argues that new drugs get into the hands of the sick not thanks to drug and biotech companies, but to the passion of dedicated scientists—in both the private sector and the public. A former Chief Economics Correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and an award-winning journalist, Goozer writes with skill and elegance, incorporating anecdote and history in a way that enlivens his research and makes his book an engrossing read. Though the issue of drug costs has been discussed extensively in the media, Goozer’s study puts all the political chatter, news coverage and analysts’ reports into a context where they finally make sense.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
The pharmaceutical industry claims that it can continue playing a key role in the development of new weapons against disease only if Americans pay prices for medicines that yield very high profits. It also claims that price controls would cause the stream of new products to dry up. Merrill Goozner, a former chief economics correspondent at the Chicago Tribune, comes to a conclusion that is very different from the views espoused by the drug companies. He does so on the basis of a detailed review of the development of drugs to combat cancer and the human immunodeficiency virus, a description of the early successes of therapies developed by the biotechnology industry, and a review of the economics of "me-too" products, such as H(sub 2) antagonists, proton-pump inhibitors, and allergy medications. He believes that the private sector's main role is to develop and commercialize therapies that are based on knowledge generated by independent researchers in academia and in government. In his opinion, high prices and big profits are not the key ingredients in pharmaceutical breakthroughs. On one hand, this book gives the reader lots of interesting and useful background about the people and organizations involved in expanding medical knowledge and in developing drugs. On the other hand, it falls short of what I expected from the title. It is not a detailed forensic accounting of the true cost of developing individual drugs as compared with industry claims. Indeed, the only real discussion of the $800 million pill (the alleged average cost of developing a new drug in the United States) comes in a brief review of a study by the Tufts University Center for the Study of Drug Development that was first published in 1991 and then updated in 2001. There is a brief rebuttal from other organizations in the penultimate chapter of the book, but for a reader looking for definitive "proof" or data, this book falls short. Written in the typical style of investigative journalism, the book comes across as an author's attempt to prove a point, rather than an impartial scientist's effort to answer a question. Goozner repeatedly comes back to one central theme: that medical innovations start with dedicated and passionate people, most of whom are not employed by the pharmaceutical industry, who are investigating scientific questions. Without these dedicated scientists, none of the innovations described in this book would have occurred. In other words, the development of drugs is not exclusively driven by high profits but, rather, is a collection of efforts. Goozner goes on to suggest some very useful methods for improving the process of drug development with the support of government-funded research (e.g., randomized trials comparing new and existing products, such as the Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial, known as ALLHAT). Although the approach Goozner uses in this book is not scientific, I think he makes a persuasive case. The passion of individual scientists pursuing an activity they truly enjoy, not the profit motive, has led to the major technological advances of the past century. I will end by saying that I am not one who enjoys reading books slowly. I often skim. In order to read a book from cover to cover, I have to find it truly interesting. I can tell you that I read every word of this book. Allan S. Detsky, M.D., Ph.D.

Review
"American expenditures on prescription drugs doubled between 1990 and 2000 and currently account for close to ten percent of total healthcare costs. Concerns about availability to seniors and the poor have led many to question these high costs, which pharmaceutical companies have always justified as necessary to spur the creation of new and better drugs. In this well-researched book, Goozner, former chief economics correspondent at the "Chicago Tribune, disputes these claims. He chronicles the actual clinical process by which new drugs come into being, from basic scientific research on disease processes conducted at universities and government labs to the synthesis of new chemicals."--"Library Journal

Pharma are robbing us sick!
By alex lawson
Pharmaceutical corporations are a racket. They force the American people to pay for our pharmaceutical drugs three times, first to develop the drug at national laboratories or through grants to universities, second tax payer dollars to grant and protect the monopolies, and finally in the astronomically higher drug prices we pay in America compared to anywhere else on earth.

Get the facts, read this book.

The subject material, while interesting, is unfortunately presented in a redundant and disorganized fashion. The book reads more like a collection of stories than as a coherent whole.

Jesus in Our Wombs: Embodying Modernity in a Mexican Convent (Ethnographic Studies in Subjectivity), by Rebecca J. Lester

In Jesus in Our Wombs, Rebecca J. Lester takes us behind the walls of a Roman Catholic convent in central Mexico to explore the lives, training, and experiences of a group of postulants—young women in the first stage of religious training as nuns. Lester, who conducted eighteen months of fieldwork in the convent, provides a rich ethnography of these young women's journeys as they wrestle with doubts, fears, ambitions, and setbacks in their struggle to follow what they believe to be the will of God. Gracefully written, finely textured, and theoretically rigorous, this book considers how these aspiring nuns learn to experience God by cultivating an altered experience of their own female bodies, a transformation they view as a political stance against modernity.

Lester explains that the Postulants work toward what they see as an "authentic" femininity—one that has been eclipsed by the values of modern society. The outcome of this process has political as well as personal consequences. The Sisters learn to understand their very intimate experiences of "the Call"—and their choices in answering it—as politically relevant declarations of self. Readers become intimately acquainted with the personalities, family backgrounds, friendships, and aspirations of the Postulants as Lester relates the practices and experiences of their daily lives. Combining compassionate, engaged ethnography with an incisive and provocative theoretical analysis of embodied selves, Jesus in Our Wombs delivers a profound analysis of what Lester calls the convent's "technology of embodiment" on multiple levels—from the phenomenological to the political.

From the Inside Flap
"A stunning first book, Jesus In Our Wombs is a haunting ethnography with fresh theoretical insights. Blending psychoanalytic theories with postmodern imageries, Lester demonstrates that the body is both a source and object of analysis. This is a model ethnography."—Vicki Ruiz, author of From Out of the Shadows: Mexican Women in the Twentieth-Century America

"In Jesus In Our Wombs, Rebecca Lester uses her rich, evocative ethnography of the first year experiences of nuns-in-training to explore the formation and transformation of selves, the relationships of bodily practices, and the centrality of gender to these intertwined processes of self-formation and embodiment. This work will spark renewed interest in the potential of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic theories of change to offer insights for crucial theoretical issues in anthropology and the social sciences more generally. A superb book."—Dorothy Hodgson, author of The Church of Women: Gendered Encounters between Maasai and Missionaries

"This study of young Mexican nuns in their first year of training is a thought provoking and ethnographically rich work that will be an important contribution to the anthropological study of religion, gender, and embodiment. Through her careful analysis of the ways the postulates negotiate their training intellectually, emotionally, and bodily, Lester provides unique insights into the religious processes of personal transformation. A beautifully observed ethnography of life in a Catholic convent."—Joel Robbins, author of Becoming Sinners: Christianity and Moral Torment in a Papua New Guinea Society

Anthropology at its best!
By Rose Captain
This is an excellent piece of scholarship and prose. Rebecca Lester takes us into the lives of young Mexican postulants in a way that challenges how we think about "being" and "becoming". Lester investigates, and clearly articulates, how twenty young women learn to embody what it means to be a nun within the unique Mexican nationalist context. The first half of the book investigates how the women learn to be nuns through the reshaping of their own subjective experiences of the world, their selves, and God. The second half chronicles the social history of life in Mexico, paying particular attention to local conceptions of femininity and modernity. Readers will learn how the convent's philosophy resonates with Mexican femininity in a way that provides the young postulants with a legitimate avenue for being both a modern and tradition Mexican woman through serving God and the poor. Though Jesus in Our Wombs is theoretically rigorous, Lester writes with clarity, articulating deep philosophical questions and insights in everyday language. This is a MUST READ for people interested in anthropology, existential philosophy, feminist theory, Mexico, and Catholicism. Yes, indeed, readers will find so much to think and talk about after reading this book!

fabulous ethnography
By lithuanian clown
this book is excellent ethnography. It is not so interview and autobiographically driven as modern ethnographies tend to be (and as a result it is getting harder to find presses that publish ethnographies). In fact, a criticism i have, minor, is that the author though arguing that all selves are embodied, remains like the authors in older more traditional ethnographies, outside the content perched on a meta branch. The writing is brilliant in that the author writes clearly and with literary skill. we follow many of the postulants from the time in their lives preceding entry into the convent through their first year. we see them both as individuals and as being institutionally shaped without being "brain-washed." it is a text that conveys this dialectic of an honest honorable institution and its masters and the personalities of the novices as they interact without taking sides. The author observes, records, analyzes the process in a way that is neither objective nor subjective, but rather, intelligent and agenda-less. I find the final analysis in the last chapters less convincing and problematic. too complex and not so easily tied to the ethnography itself. But I don't really care. for gaining insight into convent life and into the sisters that make it up this is an outstanding book. for those writing or researching social institutions and its members this book can serve as a wonderful template for field work. one thing it does not do is reduce people to numbers or tokens, or symbols of oppression or examples of marginal persona. I gave it to Lithuanian students to read and they loved it. it makes one think about the relation between the individual, the construction of self, and the institution and the national context in which the institution is embedded and that's good. .

Zionism and the Fin de Siècle: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism from Nordau to Jabotinsky, by Michæl Stanislawski

Michael Stanislawski's provocative study of Max Nordau, Ephraim Moses Lilien, and Vladimir Jabotinsky reconceives the intersection of the European fin de siècle and early Zionism. Stanislawski takes up the tantalizing question of why Zionism, at a particular stage in its development, became so attractive to certain cosmopolitan intellectuals and artists. With the help of hundreds of previously unavailable documents, published and unpublished, he reconstructs the ideological journeys of writer and critic Nordau, artist Lilien, and political icon Jabotinsky. He argues against the common conception of Nordau and Jabotinsky as nineteenth-century liberals, insisting that they must be understood against the backdrop of Social Darwinism in the West and the Positivism of Russian radicalism in the fin de siècle, as well as Symbolism, Decadence, and Art Nouveau.

When these men turned to Zionism, Stanislawski says, far from abandoning their aesthetic and intellectual preconceptions, they molded Zionism according to their fin de siècle cosmopolitanism. Showing how cosmopolitanism turned to nationalism in the lives and work of these crucial early Zionists, this story is a fascinating chapter in European and Russian, as well as Jewish, cultural and political history.

Review
"An important contribution for serious students of Zionism and yet another example of the continuing intensity of the new historians."--"Jerusalem Post

From the Inside Flap
"Stanislawski shows that each of these three [Nordau, Lilien, and Jabotinsky] came to Zionism out of engagement with the larger issues that preoccupied intellectuals and artists at the turn of the century and that the adoption of Jewish nationalism was by no means a foregone conclusion or an inevitable trajectory. The chapters are written in a lively and accessible style."—David Biale, author of Eros and the Jews

Promises too much
By Fredric Dicker
This book, while occasionally interesting and informative, doesn't live up to its promise of placing Zionism in the context of the Fin de Siecle, that caldron of ideas which ushered in our modern era. At times reading like a narrowly focused historical monograph and at other times reading like a series of esoteric literary reviews, the book uses the nomenclature of a PhD dissertation to produce an ultimately unsatisfying overview of one of the most fascinating, and important, movements of the modern age, Zionism. For those seeking a solid grounding in the intellectual origins of the Zionist movement, there must be a better book.

Obvious and Sneering
By A Customer
Well, of course (a) Nordau, Lillian and Jabotinsky were a product of their time and (b) Jabotinsky wasn't one of the great literary masters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but so what? I can't quite figure out what the point of the book was. That said, I found the actual historical information very useful, especially the discussion of Nordau's bizzare love affair with a Russian noblewoman. I can't say that this book is required reading for those interested in these Zionist personalities, but it is useful.
P.S. Is it possible to write a scholarly book without sneering at the historical figures you are reviewing? I think it is and it Stanislawski's superciliousness towards the very people about whom he is writing is both grating and unbecoming.

Acculturated Zionists
By Thomas Mitchell
This is the story of three individual cosmopolitan Jews embedded in the intellectual cultures of their respective countries who then became Zionists in the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. One is a little known Jewish artist resident in Berlin who became the first graphic artist to become a Zionist. The other two are: Max Nordau, the deputy of Zionist organization founder Theodore Herzl, and Vladimir Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the founder of Revisionist Zionism, the school of Zionism from which the ruling Likud party in Israel emerged in the 1970s. The focus of the book is the reason for the conversion to Zionism of these three individuals (there is also a chapter discussing the conversion of Herzl). According to Stanislawski, a historian specializing in Jewish history in the late 19th century, Herzl, Nordau and Jabotinsky all became Zionists because of personal dissatisfaction and a sense of emptiness that led them to nationalism and anti-semitism kept them from becoming nationalists of the countries in which they lived. The major portion of this book is taken up with the stories of Nordau and Jabotinsky. I bought it because I'm writing a book on Likud leaders and wanted more insight into the young Jabotinsky. I was quite satisfied.

Home Bound: Filipino American Lives across Cultures, Communities, and Countries, by Yen Le Espiritu

Filipino Americans, who experience life in the United States as immigrants, colonized nationals, and racial minorities, have been little studied, though they are one of our largest immigrant groups. Based on her in-depth interviews with more than one hundred Filipinos in San Diego, California, Yen Le Espiritu investigates how Filipino women and men are transformed through the experience of migration, and how they in turn remake the social world around them. Her sensitive analysis reveals that Filipino Americans confront U.S. domestic racism and global power structures by living transnational lives that are shaped as much by literal and symbolic ties to the Philippines as they are by social, economic, and political realities in the United States.

Espiritu deftly weaves vivid first-person narratives with larger social and historical contexts as she discovers the meaning of home, community, gender, and intergenerational relations among Filipinos. Among other topics, she explores the ways that female sexuality is defined in contradistinction to American mores and shows how this process becomes a way of opposing racial subjugation in this country. She also examines how Filipinos have integrated themselves into the American workplace and looks closely at the effects of colonialism.

Review
"Discusses Filipino immigrants in San Diego and how they use their memories of their country to construct a new home in the United States."--"Chronicle of Higher Education"

From the Inside Flap
"In this highly original and inspired book, Espiritu bursts the binaries and shows us how the tensions of race, gender, nation, and colonial legacies situate contemporary transnationalism. Conceptually rich and empirically grounded, Home Bound blurs the borders of sociology and cultural studies like no other book I know. Kudos to Espiritu for this boundary-breaking tour de force!"—Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo, author of Domestica: Cleaning and Caring in the Shadows of Affluence

"A singular achievement. Not only does it cast light on the deep historical entanglements of immigration and imperialism, citizenship and race, and gender and subjectivity in the United States, but by highlighting the varied voices of Filipino Americans, it also calls attention to their creative potential to make a home under some of the most inhospitable conditions. Theoretically rich, empirically grounded, and lucidly written, this book marks a major advance in our attempts to understand the 'specter of migration' haunting the world today."—Vicente L. Rafael, author of White Love and Other Events in Filipino History

"Home Bound combines excellent ethnography of the Filipino experience in the U.S. with a brilliant and devastating critique of traditional scholarship on immigration. Espiritu's analysis of how the vectors of identity articulate with one another is particularly cutting-edge."—Sarah J. Mahler, author of American Dreaming: Immigrant Life on the Margins

"Using a critical transnational, feminist, and historical perspective, Espiritu insightfully and sensitively analyzes the meaning of home, community, friendship, love, and family for Filipino Americans. In the process, she unveils what these immigrants can tell us about gender, race, politics, economics, and culture in the United States today."—Diane L. Wolf, author of Factory Daughters: Gender, Household Dynamics, and Rural Industrialization in Java

"Espiritu makes an outstanding contribution to our appreciation of the dynamics of immigrant cultures within the political economy of transnationalism."—Lisa Lowe, author of Immigrant Acts: On Asian American Cultural Politics

A must-read Asian American Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Immigrant Studies Text
By JVS
Yen Le Espiritu, in her book, Home Bound: Filipino American Lives Across Cultures, Communities, and Countries, "contends that Filipino American racial formation is determined not only by the social, economic, and political forces in the United States but also by U.S. (neo)colonialism in the Philippines and capital investment in Asia" (1). Moreover, not content with the narrow, one-sided focus that Filipinos are transformed through the experience of colonialism and migration, Espiritu highlights how Filipinos "in turn transform and remake the social world around them" (2). Home Bound is most specifically an ethnographic study of Filipino Americans in and around San Diego, CA, that is grounded nicely by Espiritu through U.S. immigration laws, U.S. imperialism and colonialism, and intersectional analyses. Espiritu presents the experiences of Filipino Americans in order to educate us about this often overlooked population through their own voices.

Scholars in Women's Studies and Gender Studies may be especially drawn to chapter 7, where Espiritu focuses on the way gender is used by racialized immigrants to assert their superiority over the dominant (white). In this chapter Espiritu turns to second generation daughters and the way in which it is through them, specifically the enforcement of their "female morality-defined as women's dedication to their families and sexual restraint" (160), that racialized immigrants construct themselves as superior. In other words, in light of the racist oppressions they face, one method of responding that immigrants have deployed is to assert their (daughters') moral superiority over whites. Through the lens of generations (first, second, etc.) of immigration, Espiritu challenges us to think of the multiple, intersectional systems, at play, while making clear that this manner of response is not without its own complications and contradictions (namely, the perpetuation of sexist oppression and patriarchal power over daughters).

In addition, I found particularly compelling the end of Espiritu's book, chapters 8 and 9, where she delves more in depth to the ways in which Filipino Americans transform and remake the world around them. These two chapters excitingly point to the new and creative relations constructed by Filipino Americans in regards to cross-racial social relations and immigration as a technology of racialization and gendering.

Reforming Suburbia: The Planned Communities of Irvine, Columbia, and The Woodlands, by Ann Forsyth

The "new community" movement of the 1960s and 1970s attempted a grand experiment in housing. It inspired the construction of innovative communities that were designed to counter suburbia's cultural conformity, social isolation, ugliness, and environmental problems. This richly documented book examines the results of those experiments in three of the most successful new communities: Irvine Ranch in Southern California, Columbia in Maryland, and The Woodlands in the suburbs of Houston, Texas.

Based on new research and interviews with developers, designers, and residents, Ann Forsyth traces the evolution, the successes, and the shortcomings of these experiments in urban innovation. Where they succeeded, in areas such as community identity and open space preservation, they provide support for current "smart growth" proposals. Where they did not, in areas such as housing affordability and transportation choices, they offer important insights for today's planners, designers, developers, civic leaders, and others interested in incorporating new forms of development into their designs.

well-informed but could have dug deeper
By Michael Lewyn
This fact-filled book profiles three suburbs whose developers sought to be innovative: Irvine near Los Angeles, Columbia between Baltimore and Washington, and the Woodlands near Houston. These suburbs, mostly built in the 1960s/70s/80s, attempted to improve upon typical suburbia in various ways: Irvine by promoting multifamily housing, Columbia by promoting racial integration, and Woodlands by trying to prevent pollution-creating water runoff. As Forsyth points out, these suburbs were successful in many ways: they made money for their developers, and their residents are at least as contented as those of other places.

However, these suburbs turned out not to be all that revolutionary in some ways; for example, all three became just as car-dependent as typical suburbs. Was this inevitable? Forsyth does point out that these suburbs had lots of cul-de-sacs (which tends to impair walkability by making people go out of their way to reach destinations). She also notes that the suburbs weren't significantly less compact than new urbanist suburbs being built at the time of the book. But at the time of the book, those suburbs were so new that perhaps they weren't the best basis for comparison.

A more informative discussion would have compared the book to the not-so-car-dependent railroad suburbs of New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Had Forsyth done so, she would have noted how spread out the three "new towns" she profiles were; for example, these suburbs she profiles have densities of 3500-5000 people per square mile, more than many suburbs but fewer than many railroad suburbs such as Bronxville, New York (6700 people per square mile) or Arlington, Va. (over 8,000 per square mile). In addition, one major difference between these three suburbs and railroad suburbs is distance from other transit-oriented areas: these suburbs were all quite far from regional downtowns, while the most transit oriented suburbs are "inner ring" suburbs bordering central cities.

The Transnational Villagers, by Peggy Levitt

Contrary to popular opinion, increasing numbers of migrants continue to participate in the political, social, and economic lives of their countries of origin even as they put down roots in the United States. The Transnational Villagers offers a detailed, compelling account of how ordinary people keep their feet in two worlds and create communities that span borders. Peggy Levitt explores the powerful familial, religious, and political connections that arise between Miraflores, a town in the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood in Boston and examines the ways in which these ties transform life in both the home and host country.

The Transnational Villagers is one of only a few books based on in-depth fieldwork in the countries of origin and reception. It provides a moving, detailed account of how transnational migration transforms family and work life, challenges migrants' ideas about race and gender, and alters life for those who stay behind as much, if not more, than for those who migrate. It calls into question conventional thinking about immigration by showing that assimilation and transnational lifestyles are not incompatible. In fact, in this era of increasing economic and political globalization, living transnationally may become the rule rather than the exception.

From the Inside Flap
"The Transnational Villagers is one of the finest empirical studies available of a phenomenon that is commanding the attention of scholars and policymakers--the creation and maintenance of social ties and dual lives across national borders. In this admirable ethnography, Levitt offers a glimpse of what the world of the new century might begin to look like. This book both contributes to the vibrant research literature on international migration, and challenges it."—Rubén G. Rumbaut, co-author of Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation

"Levitt allows her respondents to speak and to tell marvelously incisive stories that reveal the dislocations as well as the new possibilities associated with transnationalism. The Transnational Villagers is a major contribution to our understanding of the meaning of borders in an age when technology increasingly seems to allow humans to leap effortlessly over them."—Richard Alba, author of Ethnic Identities

"Levitt's study makes abundantly clear that immigration is no longer a one-way process, but a complex multi-faceted experience increasingly bringing together places of origin and destination. A must read for anyone interested in immigration and national development."—Alejandro Portes, co-author of Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second-Generation

"In her study of Dominicans living in Boston yet maintaining close connection with family and politics in the Dominican Republic, Levitt asks, do these new transnational communities mean something new for our long established expectation of assimilation to American society and if so, what? She truly breaks new ground in our understanding of immigration and ethnicity today."—Nathan Glazer, author of We Are All Multiculturalists Now

"Levitt provides an empathetic and rich account of village life and the lives of ordinary migrants, but also makes a major original contribution to social scientists' understanding of migration and the diffusion of global culture. Beautifully written, forcefully argued, and theoretically original, this book should be required reading for anyone concerned with immigration, globalization or development studies."—Mary Waters, author of Black Identities: West Indian Immigrant Dreams and American Realities

Better than would be expected explanation of Migrant Life
By Daniel A. Stone
Over eighty years ago, William Thomas and Florian Znaniecki postulated that the effect of immigration to the United States by over a million Poles would not only change the Polish arrivals, but would also alter the definition, at least slightly, of what it meant to be American-their study showed little concern for what would happen in Poland, and need not have contained any concern for a concept such as trans-nationality.

As Peggy Leavitt shows though in her study of Dominican immigrants-specifically, and it would seem exclusively, Mirofloreños-to the Jamaica Plains section of Boston, The Transnational Villagers, large scale immigration of Dominicans to the United States have brought about radical and far reaching effects on the culture and economy of the Dominican Republic. As Leavitt demonstrates through the anecdotes of informants and about informants, Miraflores' residents, whether migrants or non-migrants, have had their ways life thoroughly altered by the presence of so many of their townsfolk in Jamaica Plains. These changes, in things as frivolous as dress and as serious as attitudes towards the opposite sex and marriage, are all part and parcel of a ideological and material dialectic going on between perceived Dominican norms and those arising from extended contact with American culture and economy.

Dominican contact with American society is not a new occurrence. The fact baseball is more popular than soccer is but only one example of cultural exchange, and like the vast majority of immigrants making their way to the United States, they have some acquaintance with American popular culture even if only through media images. Trans-nationality among Dominicans of working class status is a relatively new affair, but one which is beginning to have far reaching effects-such as the relative ease with which Dominicans can attain bi-nationality because of legal reforms.

In regards to assimilation into the mainstream of American culture, trans-nationalization can be as much an inhibiting factor as it is a promoter. Considering the examples that Leavitt gives of the working and living conditions of Dominicans in Boston, where most immigrants work long hours at jobs that do not bring them into contact with the larger Anglophone world, and the kind of problems that children apparently have trouble adjusting to either world when they go back and forth between the two, would both seem to be indications that trans-nationalization was not helping assimilation along. The fact that the Dominican Republic's government no longer treats trans-nationals as suspect, at least to the extent that people who hold American citizenship can hold most offices, may promote some form of assimilation, because the legal consequences of doing such has become virtually non-existent for those who may hope to return home. This will be a different form of assimilation than nineteenth and twentieth century immigrants experienced, but it will be assimilation of a sort-a kind that is much more capable of maintaining close ties to the home country than the generations before.

As Leavitt shows almost uncategorically, trans-nationalization has thoroughly altered gender roles among Dominicans in the United States, and has altered gender roles to a limited degree on the island itself-at least among return migrants. This, though, is not a case of immigrants assimilating American values about gender, which run the gamut from machismo to conservatism to feminism, but is rather a pragmatic response to the material changes arising from immigration. In Jamaica Plains, life is dominated by work to such a degree that many men simply do not have the time to have extramarital affairs. Also, since women are working, a great many men find themselves in the unfamiliar position of having to take on at least a few tasks which would have been considered solely women's work on the island. As Leavitt further points out as well, relative poverty and cold weather even have the affect of keeping couples closer together-forms of single gender sociability prevalent on the island simply become impractical to maintain. Return migrants, if Leavitt's sources are any indices; do not completely revert to old gender based habits upon their return to the island-though men especially may be subtle about just how much their behavior has changed.

This response barely touches upon the theoretical frameworks which Leavitt works within, partially because of reasons of space, but mostly because theory is not one of my strongest suits. Please forgive the omission.

Neo-Modernization Theory at It's Best!
By A Customer
Levitt offers us a number of interesting insights into the lives of Dominican migrants in the 21st Century. She tells us that the lives of Dominicans in the U.S. and those who remain in their local communities at home are shaped by the transnational experience. This is largely the product of what she refers to as "social remittance." Levitt also goes into a long discussion of the role that institutions like political parties, the Church, and community development organizations play in this process. In many ways this analysis is a re-cycled version of earlier analyses of immigrants. For instance, Bodner gives us a version of this story in "The Transplanted." Of course, Levitt attributed this new form of "Transnationalism" to thinks like improvements in technology, communications, transportation, and interpretations of citizenship by governments. For those of us who remember the heyday of modernization theory, much of this sounds familiar, and wanton for a critique focusing on issues of inequality. Although Levitt takes the discussion of Transnationalism further than some of her contemporaries, it remains encumbered by the theoretical limitations of her selected framework.

Accessible scholarly book on important new social phenomenon
By A Customer
This book is a fun read; I enjoyed it very much. It's a well written, well researched account of how Dominican immigrants retain strong, multiple ties to their homeland. Sociologist Levitt explores the nature of these ties and their implications, drawing on many examples from her extensive fieldwork.
