"The vast amount of research the author has put into preparing this collection is obvious but never intrusive."--"Indian Times"

When Mountains were People
By Althea
This book, although it is almost 60 years old, is still a valuable resource for anyone interested in Native mythology, especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest. If you lived in Greece your experience of the people and the places there would be vastly enhanced by knowledge of the Greek myths; it is the same here--there is an ancient history underlying the ordinary towns and landscapes of Washington and Oregon, and Ella Clark went to great lengths to gather and preserve what she could of it.

The book is well organized in five sections: Myths of the Mountains; Legends of the Lakes; Tales of Rivers,Rocks and Waterfalls; Myths of Creation, the Sky and the Storms; And Misc. Myths. One-fourth of the stories were given to Ms. Clark by Native people, and at the beginning of these she gives credit by name and tribal affiliation. The others were compiled from the writings of ethnologists, missionaries, pioneers and travelers and where she knows the source she again gives credit, so that if you have a further interest you can investigate the Source Notes or the Bibliography.

There are numerous Coyote and Raven tales, but there are other less familiar Heroes and Changers too. What I liked most was the inclusion of the Native names for many of the local places. For instance, I wake every morning beneath the Olympic Mountains, which I have learned were called Ho-Had-Hun, and which were, of course, people. They were apparently people who didn't always get along with each other. Mt. Rainier (Takkobad) was once part of them but because of a disagreement with her husband she went to live on the other side of the water. She scratched his face, got in her canoe and left. She took her young son, Tahoma, with her, along with her snow water, camas roots and herbs and flowers. She didn't go so far away that she couldn't keep and eye on him though, and on clear days you can still feel the connection between them.

Connections are everything. And this little book addresses the connections between mountains and people, people and animals, animals and spirits, spirits and "inanimate" objects, in over 100 tales.

Great book!
By Janelle Lund
I originally purchased this book in the early 1970's when my children were quite young. We've always lived in the Pacific Northwest and have traveled and done a lot of camping in this beautiful country. When on long car rides/camping trips, I would read to them. Recently, all of the family was together and my children got so excited when they saw I had the book. They told my grandchildren how much the book meant to them when they were young. They picked some of their favorites legends and read them to the grandkids. It made me feel so good to see my kids excited and sharing the excitement with their kids.

Readable native american lore
By A Customer
Though this book was first published in 1953, the stories and legends enclosed in Ms. Clark's book are interesting in 1999. I was surprized to find a story and lore concerning a local rock painting site. Each of the stories are indentified by the tribe or nation they come from. This book is a must for anyone interested in Native American lore or legends.

The Fractious Nation?: Unity and Division in Contemporary American LifeFrom University of California Press

What are we to make of the speed with which the new climate of national solidarity emerged after September 11? Does it not look strange against a backdrop of the much-touted divisiveness of American life? In truth, The Fractious Nation? makes clear, the contrast of the time of divisiveness before and the time of unity that followed is much too stark, indeed.

Less than a year before two planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the 2000 presidential election produced not just the starkly blue and red electoral map but also the two tribal Americas those totemic colors emblazoned. And from the cultural wars to immigration restriction, from the Christian right to political correctness, recent decades have witnessed much hand-wringing on the left and the right about the fragmentation of American life. The Fractious Nation? enlists the critical intelligence of fourteen distinguished contributors who illuminate the schisms in American life and the often volatile debates they have inspired in the realms of culture, ethnic and racial pluralism, and political life.

The collective wisdom of The Fractious Nation? suggests a counterview to all the overheated rhetoric. The authors warn against fixating on flamboyant incidents of racial conflict when black-and-white values overlap considerably. On a range of cultural issues, the gap between our citizens has closed as well. And even as the rivalry between liberalism and conservatism transmutes into new forms, the political center remains vital and democratic. We are tied together not just by shared values but by institutions—the Constitution, the culture of consumption, the etiquette of ethnic respect.

In private life and public affairs, our nation has expanded the meaning of democratic citizenship. Still, there's no room for self-congratulations here. Tendencies toward preoccupation with private life encourage indifference to the suffering of the less privileged. This is also one of the main failings of the narrative of fragmentation: In its focus on matters of shared values, it too distracts from issues of poverty and inequality that also fragment the human spirit.

"This is an accessibly written and valuable collection by outstanding social scientists addressed to the broad question of whether the United States is experiencing or headed for a 'culture war.'"

From the Inside Flap
Less than a year before two planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the 2000 presidential election produced not just the blue-and-red electoral map but also revealed the fractured nation that those totemic colors represent.

"This collection of essays offers a bracing challenge to widely held beliefs about cultural and political fragmentation in the United States today. The Fractious Nation? may well change the debate on issues ranging from multiculturalism and race relations to governance and public philosophy."—William A. Galston, author of Liberal Purposes: Goods, Virtues, and Diversity on the Liberal State

"The virtue of this stunning collection of essays is the shrewd moderation of its authors, who explain that while we in the United States have serious social conflict, we also have the intellectual resources to address it. Most of all, The Fractious Nation, whose contributors embrace very different political approaches, reminds us that we must struggle to understand what constitutes nationhood in this difficult century."—Stanley N. Katz, professor, Woodrow Wilson School, and director of Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies, Princeton University

"With an all-star team of contributors, this volume explores the many ways that fear of fragmentation plagues the American psyche today and provides the kind of understanding that allows us to overcome such fears. The breadth of talent assembled between the covers of this book is simply awesome."—Robert Suro, author of Strangers among Us: Latino Lives in a Changing America

Musical Meaning: Toward a Critical History, by Lawrence Kramer

Lawrence Kramer has been a pivotal figure in the development of the controversial new musicology, integrating the study of music with social and cultural issues. This accessible and eloquently written book continues and deepens the trajectory of Kramer's thinking as it boldly argues that humanistic, not just technical, meaning is a basic force in music history and an indispensable factor in how, where, and when music is heard. Kramer draws on a broad range of music and theory to show that the problem of musical meaning is not just an intellectual puzzle, but a musical phenomenon in its own right.

How have romantic narratives involving Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata affected how we hear this famous piece, and what do they reveal about its music? How does John Coltrane's African American identity affect the way we hear him perform a relatively "white" pop standard like "My Favorite Things"? Why does music requiring great virtuosity have different cultural meanings than music that is not particularly virtuosic? Focusing on the classical repertoire from Beethoven to Shostakovich and also discussing jazz, popular music, and film and television music, Musical Meaning uncovers the historical importance of asking about meaning in the lived experience of musical works, styles, and performances. Kramer's writing, clear and full of memorable formulations, demonstrates that thinking about music can become a vital means of thinking about general questions of meaning, subjectivity, and value. In addition to providing theoretical advances and insights on particular pieces and repertoires, Musical Meaning will be provocative reading for those interested in issues of identity, gender, and cultural theory. This book includes a CD of Kramer's own composition, Revenants: 32 Variations in C Minor, which he discusses in his final chapter.

From the Inside Flap
"A major work of consistently striking originality and insight, produced by a mature scholar at the peak of his career. To his subject Kramer brings a distinctly impressive command of recent cultural and critical theory, and an equally impressive knowledge of a broad range of music literature, from Beethoven to Coltrane. Kramer reads music and musical practices with captivating, compelling insight. His work provides readers with an immeasurably better grasp of how and what music means, and also how music shapes people."—Richard Leppert, author of The Sight of Sound

About the Author
Lawrence Kramer is Professor of English and Music at Fordham University and the coeditor of 19th Century Music. He is author of six books, including After the Lovedeath: Sexual Violence and the Making of Culture (California 1997), Classical Music and Postmodern Knowledge (California 1995), and Music as Cultural Practice, 1800–1900 (California 1990).

meaning is subjective BUT
By Jeremiah Lawson
Kramer essentially argues that the meaning of music is subjective and that we attribute meaning to music. But he argues against the idea that music can mean whatever people want it to mean and uses literary history and film soundtracks to prove that subjective meaning is music is corporate as well as individual. His best example is the legendary violin shrieks in Psycho. Without Janet Leigh's scream those violin shrieks could mean something else. The violin shrieks don't acquire meaning by themselves but through historic association with the film. This case study alone provides the example of his best work and the case of the whole book.
Much of the book is mired in too much political theory for my taste and Kramer fumbles with most jazz. He never even addresses rock music despite making the case that avant garde music left normal listeners no option but to look to rock and jazz for tunes. For an argument that pointed he should have at least explained why he didn't examine pop music.
You may want to check out Rhythm & Noise by Theodore Gracyk since that book explores related ideas on the other side of the pop/art music divide.

Revealing look at Tibetan monastic education
By Daiho
George BJ Dreyfus has written a wonderfully informative account of Tibetan monastic education that ends on something of a flat note. After conceding that scholasticism, the study of sacred texts, leads to “believing what you are supposed to, despite your best efforts to question,” Dreyfus asserts in his closing paragraph that it nevertheless results as well in “an ability without which deeper understanding is impossible.” Nothing in his account appears to lead such a conclusion. On the contrary, one of his Tibetan teachers notes that while Dreyfus understands the words, he doesn’t grasp the meaning. “We could even defeat [in debate] a person who had realized emptiness!” His teacher knows that realization is available even to those without this level of scholastic ability. If you ever thought you wanted to study at a Tibetan monastery, read this book. You might change your mind.

Extremely Valuable Inside Look at Ge-luk Monasticism
By Barnaby A Thieme
Georges Dreyfus is a scholar of truly prodigious learning. In this book he reflects on his unique experience studying in various Ge-luk-ba monastic education centers in the Tibetan exile community in India, particularly at Drepung Loseling and the Institute of Dialectics. Dreyfus displays his great erudition in a fashion that is illuminating and not pedantic.
Most of the book is occupied with a historical and philosophical analysis of the Ge-luk scholastic approach to Buddhism. In particular, he focuses on two tensions within Ge-luk-ba. The first is the tension between exegesis and debate. The second is the tension between doctrinal allegiance to canonical texts and free and open inquiry into ideas. The picture of Ge-luk-ba scholasticism that emerges from Dreyfus' careful analysis of these twin tensions is a conservative institution that produces brilliant, and sometimes daring, thinkers.
This work is extremely valuable to scholars and dedicated practitioners alike, because it provides a unique insider's view of Tibetan Buddhist monastic education. Dreyfus is not only well steeped in the tradition he analyzes; he also maintains his scholarly rigor and critical acumen.
Dreyfus explains many practical aspects of Tibetan Buddhism that are not frequently discussed in Western scholarship. For example, I found it very illuminating to learn that, for scholars, Lam Rim texts and the related "Grounds and Paths" Prajnaparamita literature are not typically treated as literal, programmatic instructions on meditation courses. Rather, they are regarded as presenting systematic, overarching depictions of the Buddhist philosophical universe. This book is filled with important observations of this type.
If there is a weakness to this book (other than its rather unfortunate title), it is admittedly one-sided in its sphere of interest. It struck me as highly significant that the word "compassion" scarcely appears in this book. I believe it can be read in part as an apology for a style of monastic engagement, which places an enormous emphasis on study and debate, while not formally encouraging meditative praxis. This book focuses on the development of prajna on the basis of study and reflection, but strongly underemphasizes the soteriological aspect of Buddhism.
Of course, it is the author's prerogative to focus on their area of interest, and Dreyfus has done so with a magisterial understanding of the issues in question, carefully honed by decades of research.
A wonderful book.

Incisive look at the Gelugpa monastic training
By P.J. Neastroem
Dreyfus is to be congratulated for having written a very readable and penetrating look into the training in the Gelugpa tradition. It portrays a fascinating journey deep into the worldview and mind of a very different culture, which unveils some interesting, fundamental assumptions of both his own Western culture as well as that of the Tibetan. It is an honest and balanced account, which sometimes identifies painfully troubling aspects, sometimes wonderful features of this most profound tradition. He also makes enlightening and relevant reflections, based on Western thinkers, which sheds refreshing perspectives on the monastic life. The book is of particular interest to those who have done some reading, and perhaps practice, in the Tibetan tradition and who are interested in getting a better look at, for instance, debate in practice.

Thank you Mr. Dreyfus!

The Amazing Bud Powell: Black Genius, Jazz History, and the Challenge of Bebop, by Guthrie P. Ramsey Jr.

Bud Powell was not only one of the greatest bebop pianists of all time, he stands as one of the twentieth century’s most dynamic and fiercely adventurous musical minds. His expansive musicianship, riveting performances, and inventive compositions expanded the bebop idiom and pushed jazz musicians of all stripes to higher standards of performance. Yet Powell remains one of American music’s most misunderstood figures, and the story of his exceptional talent is often overshadowed by his history of alcohol abuse, mental instability, and brutalization at the hands of white authorities. In this first extended study of the social significance of Powell’s place in the American musical landscape, Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr. shows how the pianist expanded his own artistic horizons and moved his chosen idiom into new realms. Illuminating and multi-layered, The Amazing Bud Powell centralizes Powell’s contributions as it details the collision of two vibrant political economies: the discourses of art and the practice of blackness.

From Publishers Weekly
Ramsey's second book (after Race Music: Black Cultures from Bebop to Hip-Hop) aims to understand "one of jazz's greatest and indeed most mysterious stars" from a variety of perspectives. He takes in bebop—from East to west and back West again—with consideration given to the social, political, and economic contexts of its day, as well as the concept of the free-spirited, convention-defying "musical genius" (in Ramsey's view "the ultimate construction of the bourgeois subject"). It is a lot to take on in such a brief book and Ramsey doesn't quite pull it off. His tendency to quote in full—often unnecessarily—and his occasional isolation of mundane details drain energy from his subjects. For instance, the author makes fine observations on how "the jazz industry" of the '40s and '50s took advantage of Black musicians, but then goes into no further detail about just how Powell's life and work were affected. What starts as an engaging criticism winds down into a pedestrian biographical observation with admirable but unrealised ambitions; it's jarring, and by trying to say a lot, results, inversely, in not saying enough. (June)

"Ramsey writes with a musician's ear. . . . Full of beauty and that edgy logic."--John Mole"The Times Literary Supplement" (06/14/2013)

From the Inside Flap
"What happens to a genius deferred? If that genius is Bud Powell, it finds resonance in the prose and cultural exegesis of Guthrie Ramsey, Jr., whose brilliant The Amazing Bud Powell offers one of the most compelling and generative views into this enigmatic giant of Black Modernism."—Mark Anthony Neal, author Looking for Leroy: Illegible Black Masculinities

An Essential and Engaging Book
By Art Lover
Those interested in the great American art form of jazz will want to add this book to their libraries. For those with an interest in the pianist Bud Powell it is essential reading. Musicologist Guthrie Ramsey has penned a deeply knowledgable and original piece of scholarship on this seminal jazz pianist. The books looks not only at Powell's musical innovations, but also examines his formative musical and personal background and the context in which his innovations were shaped.

Using a deft and engaging wrting style that will engage both lay readers, jazz aficionados and academics alike, Ramsey has penned an indispensable and seminal book.

An Amazing Book about an Amazing Musician
By H. Jones
This is an amazing book. It not only tells the story of Bud Powell, but puts that story in context so that the reader is fully immersed in the world of the time. Bud Powell had many "deficiencies," but though those complicated his life, his genius as a musician is fully recognized here and the difficulties he had to contend with are made plain. Jazz students today should study what musicians lived through in the mid-20th century to understand the struggle that preceded them, and celebrate the lives of musicians like Bud Powell.

Well worth reading and great to see something that helps increase Bud's exposure
By David Wright
An in depth study of Bud, but one that takes a broader stance than existing ones, including social and political ones. Well worth reading and great to see something that helps increase Bud's exposure. He is ridiculously uner-heard.

The Scalpel and the Butterfly: The Conflict between Animal Research and Animal Protection, by Deborah Rudacille

In this sweeping history of animal research and the animal protection movement, Deborah Rudacille examines the ethical question of whether enhancement of human life justifies the use of animals for research. She shows how the question and the answers provided by both scientists and anti-vivisectionists over the past 150 years have shaped contemporary society. Rudacille anchors her narrative in events from the lives of key players in the history of the war between science and animal protection, describing the work of activists who work outside the law as well as those working to change the system from within.

Amazon.com Review
Biological experimentation, writes science journalist Deborah Rudacille, has long been the province of a scientific elite that has not much cared to explain its work to the larger public. That public, she continues, has responded with a kind of don't-ask, don't-tell policy, "whereby society will permit animal experimentation--and certain types of research on human subjects--as long as it is protected from the details." With the rise of the Animal Liberation Movement and PETA, however, that unstated policy has increasingly come into question, and research scientists have found it increasingly difficult to employ animals (or humans, for that matter) in their work.

In her engaged and illuminating study of these clashing sensibilities, Rudacille ponders troubling questions. Does an elevation in the moral status of animals, she asks, necessarily mean degradation in the moral status of human beings? (Certainly, she responds, this appears to have been the case under Nazi Germany.) Is the killing of laboratory animals--nearly 10,000 in the case of the Salk vaccine against polio--justifiable in the face of the human lives that can be saved? Is it ethical to use the mentally ill as research subjects in studies that may yield cures for their illness? Philosophical landmines surround every attempt at an answer, and Rudacille takes pains to consider all sides of these and kindred issues. Her thoughtful work should provoke reflection and discussion. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
In this cautious, useful survey, Rudacille, a former writer and editor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, seeks a middle ground between biomedical researchers who defend animal experimentation as a necessary trade-off for potential benefits to humankind, and animal rights activists who would abolish such research. She begins with a lively account of the 19th-century antivivisection movements in Britain and the U.S., in which women figured prominently, then takes a side trip through Nazi Germany, where a ban on vivisection (perversely considered an aspect of mechanistic "Jewish" science) went hand in hand with appalling medical abuses, including eugenic sterilization, euthanasia and experimentation on human subjects. She provides in-depth profiles of animal rights pioneer Henry Spira and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) cofounders Alex Pacheco and Ingrid Newkirk. The absolutist tactics of the most visible, extremist critics of animal research, such as the Animal Liberation Front, whose members vandalize laboratories, have greatly diminished the moral legitimacy of their cause in the eyes of the public, according to Rudacille. She commends reform efforts in Europe, particularly in Great Britain, where stringent governmental oversight mandates a "cost-benefit analysis" for each animal experiment as a prerequisite to approval. Rudacille notes that in America (the world's largest user of lab animals), new technologiesAsuch as organ transplants from animal donors to humansAhave sparked intense debate over the ethics of biotechnology and its impact on society; she urges a tandem public debate on how these technologies affect animal welfare, not just human. From Library Journal
Rudacille, a former research writer and editor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, gives a balanced and detailed history of the conflict between anti-vivisectionists and research scientists. She begins with French physician Claude Bernard, whose influential textbook, Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine, is credited with the rapid spread of animal experimentation in the late 19th century. Rudacille then documents the rise of the animal welfare movement in Britain and the United States and legislation designed to govern the use of animals in research. Readers are introduced to the major animal rights players (Henry Spira, Ingrid Newkirk, Alex Pacheco) and organizations (Humane Society of the Unites States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and Animal Liberation Front). The author also discusses the Nazi "science" of eugenics and explores the ethical implications of such new scientific developments as xenotransplantation (transplanting body parts between species). Her well researched and -documented account is written for a general audience and deserves a wide readership.

A Good Overview
By Patrick Kwan
For those who are interested in a general overview of the controversy and politics over vivisection, Rudacille's book is pretty good. Surely the book does not profess to change your mind on this issue, but it is hard to read through the book without recognizing where the author stands. I find it to be a problem for those who may have only recently considered this issue. This book really does not provide much moral discussion for the reader to weigh the arguments, I think that many people who may not be versed in the moral issues may simply grow to adopt the author's position after reading the book, which is: "Vivisection is a necessary evil. We definitely should continue using animals, but we certainly should make it as less evil as possible." I'm not sure if writing the book with this slant is appropriate for a book that professes to provide a historical analysis (surely I recognize that many historical works are written with slants). I think it would be a much more valuable work if it paid more attention to and presented the philosophical/moral debates in a historical perspective. However don't get me wrong, I think people who are interested in vivisection should definitely get this book for it provides many insights that I believe to be quite interesting.

Beautifully written but strays from the topic
By Jean Greek
The prose in this book makes it a pleasure to read. Ms. Rudacille tells fasinating stories in illustrating her subject. I am not sure when I last read such a beautifully written book. I am jealous of her writing skills!
Unfortunately, I have two complaints. First, Ms. Rudicille buys completely in to the fantasy perpetuated by the scientific establishment that animal research has benefited mankind. Since she is attempting to write a balanced story of the pro and anti-vivesection movements, I would have liked for her not to have so readily accepted the standard dogma promoted by those who earn their livings from animal experimentation that we would all be dead were it not for the marvels discovered by injecting dogs, cats, rats, chimps, etc with all nature of compounds. Even a limited review of the scientific literature rapidly illustrates the fallacies of the animal experimentation lobby.
Secondly, about two thirds of the way through the book, the author leaves her subject and addresses post modernistic philopsphy. I kept waiting for her to bring it back to the title topic, that is the history of animal experimentation, but she never tied it together to my satifaction.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain

The text of this new scholarly edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the first ever to be based on Mark Twain's complete, original manuscript-including its first 665 pages, which had been lost for over a hundred years when they turned up in 1990 in a Los Angeles attic. The text has been thoroughly re-edited using this manuscript, restoring thousands of details of wording, spelling, and punctuation which had been corrupted by Mark Twain's typist, typesetters, and proofreaders. It includes all of the 174 first edition illustrations by Edward Windsor Kemble, which the author called "most rattling good." The editorial matter is extraordinarily rich. A new introduction tells the story of how Mark Twain's book was written, edited, published, and received, and spells out in detail the effect of the newly discovered manuscript on the text. Included are revised and updated maps of the Mississippi River valley, explanatory notes, glossary, and several documentary appendixes such as Twain's literary working notes, facsimile manuscript pages, facsimile reproductions of the author's revisions for his public reading tours, and contemporary advertisements and announcements. Also included are a description of the manuscript and all texts used in preparing this edition and complete lists of the author's revisions. The acclaimed 2001 mark Twain Library edition was drawn from this comprehensive new scholarly edition in the Works of Mark Twain series. 347 b/w illustrations, 5 maps

From the Inside Flap
"This is the definitive critical edition of Huckleberry Finn you've been waiting for. Ingenious textual detective work rescues Twain at last from hundreds of careless errors by typists, typesetters and proofreaders. The fascinating explanatory notes help us decode allusions that were familiar to readers in Twain's time but are obscure today, while the reproduced manuscript pages let us compare for the first time first and final drafts of some of the book's most memorable passages. This splendid book belongs in every library, home, and literature classroom."—Shelley Fisher Fishkin, author of Lighting Out for the Territory: Reflections on Mark Twain and American Culture and Editor of The Oxford Mark Twain.

"Because of the lately recovered half of the manuscript we now have the genome filled in for Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, along with the Mississippi-wide expertise that shows us how to comprehend this edition. To borrow from one of the Connecticut Yankee's walking ads, 'All the Prime-Donne will use it.'"—Louis J. Budd, author of Our Mark Twain and Mark Twain: The Contemporary Reviews

The definitive edition of Twain's masterpiece
By MarkK
This book is a must-have for serious readers of Twain's greatest novel, one well worth the expense. Based on his original manuscript, it provides the ur-text of this wonderful work (including the original illustrations), giving readers the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy the full subtlety of the author's labors.
Enhancing the experience is the excellent annotations that the editors provided. While a bit difficult to trace (the editors preferred page-line cites to footnotes, which leaves the text free of supertext clutter), they provide first-rate insight into the details of Clemens's writing and the minutiae of Huck's world. This, along with Clemens's original notes, list of revisions, fascimilies of the original manuscript, and a number of maps of Clemens's Mississippi, make this book an essential addition to the library of any student of this great writer.

The Greatest version of America's Greatest Book
By Mark J. Fowler
This review isn't to give a review of one of the most studied works of the English language, but rather to detail what makes this edition special and worthy of purchase.

At the most superficial level Huck is the sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which had introduced us to these two icons of the printed word. After Tom Sawyer was a big hit the publisher, perhaps understandably, wanted not only a sequel, but one which logically followed Tom Sawyer. They specifically desired for the two works to sit comfortably on a shelf together. Perhaps there was a time when Mark Twain desired the same thing - more of the same crowd pleasing story telling. But I think that perhaps from the beginning he recognized that he now had the audience that he wanted for his masterpiece, so he began writing it.

Even in the form which was familiar for 100 years Huckleberry Finn was widely hailed as the centerpiece of American Literature. THIS edition reveals that the masterpiece as originally conceived was even more masterly.

Clemens wrote the original manuscript and submitted it to the publisher. I don't know what they thought of the book as it was, but one thing was clear: it was a good deal longer than Tom Sawyer and sitting side by side with Tom Sawyer the two books looked less like a "pair".

So.... the editorial pruning process began and enough was removed from the originally conceived Huckleberry Finn to create both the originally published versions of Huck as well as "Life on the Mississippi".

Now we finally get to see the "complete Huck". The missing text flows along with the "original Huck" as mightily as the Mississippi that Huck and Jim ride along in the book of our dreams.

As if that weren't enough, we also are treated to original illustrations and facsimile reproductions of several of Twain's original text. I found these pages among the most enlightening of all. Almost as if he knew his handwritten pages would be looked at by posterity, Twain used a unique revision technique. Rather than erasing a word or passage he wishes to replace, he would instead line through the words in a single line, leaving the replaced word legible along with the words which would replace the revised word. By examining these hand-written lines we can see how meticulous Twain was in his word selection. In several of the passages he made slight corrections which were plainly intended to make the runaway slave, Jim, as noble as possible. It has long been a curiosity to me that this book, frequently criticized as "racist", has as it's two central characters a runaway slave and the "poor white trash" boy who decides to help him. At one point Huck is memorably torn between what the Southern Society he has been raised in says is right and what gnaws at his conscience. It is obviously an unqualified truth to Huck that Jim is uneducated and so poor that he doesn't even own himself, yet Jim possesses more humanity than any of the "civilized" southerners Huck meets. Seeing Clemens' own scrawl lets us see how diligently Clemens worked to make that distinction clear - that Jim is easily the most noble adult in the book.

I agree with Mr. Hemingway - Huckleberry Finn IS America's greatest novel. Thanks to rediscovering Twain's original text (and an entertaining sequence of events which is detailed in the introduction to this edition) we finally get to read America's greatest Novel the way that the author originally intended.

I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Huck Finn's Independence
By Luke
This is the second time that I have read the book and it was just as good as the first time through. I love the witty dialect Twain throws in to create a southern ambiance of the 19th century. This book was a huge piece of controversy at its time due to the fact a young white boy and a run a way slave team up to sail the Mississippi in seek of adventure. I find the book really interesting and at the same time almost weird, kind of on a Sci-Fi level, with everything involving how the two families kill each other including their children. Today's world is full of people trapped in the routine of society's standards and Huck is a perfect example of what many people want - independence and free spirit. I like how Huck, even though without a proper family oriented upbringing, is able to distinguish from right and wrong. It shows the incredible mental capacity humans have in their ability to reason.
