Moment of Grace: The American City in the 1950s, by Michæl Johns

Moment of Grace tells the story of the American city in its remarkable heyday. Never before or after the 1950s were downtowns so exciting, neighborhoods so settled, or suburban dwellers so optimistic. Urban culture was at its peak: it was vital, urbane, conformist, and generating rebellion all at once. Capturing the mood of the '50s in superb historical photographs and mining delightfully varied sources—including urban critics, interviews with city residents, novels, songs, magazines, and newspapers—Moment of Grace brings alive the downtowns, the neighborhoods, and the suburbs of the era. A rich historical reflection on a singular decade, the book also portrays the '50s as a critical turning point in American culture and economy. Michael Johns shows us exactly why city life never could or would be the same again.

Giving a vivid sense of the lived experience of the day, Johns explores the '50s in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Oakland, writing about fashion (which demanded the highest heels and pointiest breasts in history), nightlife, architecture, literature, business and economic trends, and teenage culture. He tells us what was for sale in the stores, who lived in the neighborhoods, what life was like for women in the brand-new suburbs, and much more. And he confronts difficult issues head-on. What did the loss of city jobs and the simultaneous success of the civil rights movement mean for black neighborhoods? What were the profound consequences of the rise of the suburbs for family life?

In contrast to the vibrant cities of the '50s, the streets of today's downtowns are often empty if not suffused with melancholy. Johns uncovers the seeds of the transformation from the '50s to today, and at the same time, he paints a memorable picture of the American past.

Review
"The central triumph of Moment of Grace is in showing how the complex interactions of big business, city hall and the national economy impacted on the lives of city-dwellers of the 1950s, often catastrophically and, in the end, ironically. The most orderly communities in history resulted, by Johns's intriguing account, from prejudice, graft and the crash of the wrecking ball."--"The Guardian (UK)"

Songs of Experience: Modern American and European Variations on a Universal Theme, by Martin Jay

Few words in both everyday parlance and theoretical discourse have been as rhapsodically defended or as fervently resisted as "experience." Yet, to date, there have been no comprehensive studies of how the concept of experience has evolved over time and why so many thinkers in so many different traditions have been compelled to understand it. Songs of Experience is a remarkable history of Western ideas about the nature of human experience written by one of our best-known intellectual historians. With its sweeping historical reach and lucid comparative analysis—qualities that have made Martin Jay's previous books so distinctive and so successful—Songs of Experience explores Western discourse from the sixteenth century to the present, asking why the concept of experience has been such a magnet for controversy. Resisting any single overarching narrative, Jay discovers themes and patterns that transcend individuals and particular schools of thought and illuminate the entire spectrum of intellectual history.

As he explores the manifold contexts for understanding experience—epistemological, religious, aesthetic, political, and historical—Jay engages an exceptionally broad range of European and American traditions and thinkers from the American pragmatists and British Marxist humanists to the Frankfurt School and the French poststructuralists, and he delves into the thought of individual philosophers as well, including Montaigne, Bacon, Locke, Hume and Kant, Oakeshott, Collingwood, and Ankersmit. Provocative, engaging, erudite, this key work will be an essential source for anyone who joins the ongoing debate about the material, linguistic, cultural, and theoretical meaning of "experience" in modern cultures.

Review
"Few in the humanities can rival Jay's omnivorousness or match his intellectual energy." - Terry Eagleton, London Review of Books "Songs of Experience is at once modest and extraordinarily ambitious. The erudition on display in this sweeping account of a central concept in Western philosophy over several hundred years is a wonder; the writing is clear, and the scholarship breathtaking. But it is modest in the sense that it does not announce its own point of view with any emphasis. Instead, the reader benefits from the author's openness to thinkers as unalike as Schleiermacher and Rorty, Oakeshott and Bataille. Jay makes sense of each thinker on his own terms - and that's because with his intellectual openness and his conceptual mediation, Jay indeed practices what he is so lightly preaching. An intellectual historian at the top of his game, he has shared his own experience of these ideas, texts, and writers. After reading this book, we can too." - Michael Roth, Bookforum "A magisterial study of one of the most elusive, contested, and pervasively important concepts of the Western philosophical tradition." - Richard Shusterman, author of Pragmatist Aesthetics"

From the Inside Flap
"Martin Jay is one of the most influential intellectual historians in contemporary America, and here he shows once again a willingness to tackle the 'big issues' in the Western cultural tradition…. A remarkable history of ideas about the nature of human experience."—Lloyd Kramer, author of Threshold of a New World

"A magisterial study of one of the most elusive, contested, and pervasively important concepts of the Western philosophical tradition. Ranging from epistemology and aesthetics to the philosophy of history, religion, and politics, Songs of Experience brilliantly traces the major lines of theory and debate. Insightful, rich, and masterfully narrated, Jay's book sings with that well-tempered voice of erudition, synthetic intelligence, and generous grace that has become his enviable trademark."—Richard Shusterman, author of Pragmatist Aesthetics

"This illuminating, provocative volume consolidates Martin Jay's standing as our leading modern intellectual historian. Ranging sure-footedly from ancient to postmodern discourse, Jay offers finely balanced readings of thinkers who have wrestled with the elusive concept of experience. Because Jay respects—and presents so clearly and sympathetically—positions different from his own, Songs of Experience gives readers the resources necessary to embrace or resist his own bold interpretations of philosophers from Kant and Burke through Dilthey and Dewey to Foucault and Rorty. This book will prove as indispensable to intellectual historians as the idea of experience itself."—James T. Kloppenberg, author of The Virtues of Liberalism

The Varieties of "Experience" from the Greeks to Foucault
By Richard Gringeri
Berkeley historian and critic, Martin Jay, offers a roadmap to trace the many vicissitudes of the idea of "experience" from the Greeks to Foucault. No other book out there does so with the thoroughness and detail for which Jay is justly known. Showing its roots in the Greek stress on reason and its capacities, Jay goes on to describe the humanist appropriation of it in Montaigne (1533-1592), whose holistic concept inevitably splits off into epistemological, religious, aesthetic, political and historical variants. In a novel move, Jay then shows how various 20th-century traditions (dialectical, pragmatist, phenomenological and poststructuralist) all try to reconstitute a more holistic version of the concept with varying degress of success. Or rather, "success," he tells us, is not entirely the right word, for there is no putatively correct version toward which the story leads. Although Jay provides hints sometimes about why a variant of the idea should have taken the form it did, he generally eschews rooting the ideas in the life-experiences of the authors he considers. "Such attempts," he explains, "generally presuppose a given notion of the experience out of which the ideas are alleged to emerge" (5). His whole book is aimed against this presupposition.

The book is very rich and fairly luxuriates in the many relevant primary and secondary texts turned up in his research. These are not just window-dressing but themselves play a large role in informing the reader about Jay's statements and judgments of specific authors and the peculiarities of their arguments. The last chapter on poststructuralism may come as a surprise, for it shows how Bataille, Barthes, and Foucault--who are usually taken to be destroyers of the centered self and its unproblematic inner experience--actually push for concepts and practices that yield a somewhat more positive notion of experience. In this new light, Bataille appears as a devotee of a Nietzschean experimental life that is not automatically nihilistic. An admirer of Bataille, the literary critic Roland Barthes offers an image of a desiring body drawn to whatever takes its fancy in spite of the specter of death that haunts his whole "cruising" mentality. Yet another supporter of Bataille, Michel Foucault, combines Bataille, Barthes and Nietzsche to propose a daredevil savant ceaselessly juggling "the subject, truth and the constitution of experience" (394). Although Jay wouldn't endorse Foucault's concept as the latest and thus correct verson, he does admire its combination of the moments contained within it: Bildung, aesthetic self-fashioning, prereflective existence and postreflective reconstruction. It is therefore not surprising that Jay ends his "experience-book" (Foucault's term) (409) with the idea that experience is a constant opening out to the world of the other, or the new, so that you may be transformed. It's a voyage he urges on us all even though we may encounter a shipwreck or two. The alternative, to remain inside our narrow and comforting circles of rectitude, leads to an identity politics of a shrill and crabbèd sort Jay can only reject. Whether or not the poststructuralist re-animation of experience actually recovers Montaigne's capacious humanist approach is debatable. What is certain is that, after Jay, we can no longer appeal to the "irreducibility of experience" as if it were self-evident. The result is a breakthrough for fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, ethnic groups and their others--indeed, for civilizations as a whole--in their vexed attempts to communciate across the experience-line.

A Blakean Song to the History of Ideas
By A Certain Bibliophile
The last five hundred years of Western philosophy have been beguiled by the notion of "authentic experience," and especially how it has been cordoned off from the sensorium of the human mind. In a highly worthy addition to the history of ideas, Martin Jay aims to examine several "modes of experience" - the religious, aesthetic, historical, postmodern among them - so that we might better understand how this precarious category has been understood throughout the history of western thought.

Jay begins immediately by distinguishing between the two large, general types of experience called Erlebnis (which is immediate pre-reflective, and personal) and the Ehfahrung (based on sensual impressions and cognitive judgments). In one of the most interesting parts of the book, Jay details how Michel Montaigne reconfigures experience from a set of powers embodied in the human mind to a set of frailties and weaknesses which delimit those powers, hence his famous quip that "to philosophize is to learn how to die." Montaigne's subjective interiority of experience was radically changed during the Scientific Revolution in which the scientific method externalized and objectified sensory data, creating a public sphere of inquiry which had never been in place before the seventeenth century. The chapter progresses as a précis of Western philosophical traditions, with everything from Bacon's emphasis on observation to Kant's positing of a noumenal world that is the "raw material" for our transcendental faculties to feast upon.

Jay then turns to a chapter about the "Appeal of Religious Experience," an examination of Schleiermacher, James, Otto, and Buber. He reads Schleiermacher, as most historians have, as a substantive response to Kant, a sort of anti-Enlightenment personalism, which was continued by the likes of Buber and Otto. His readings of these figures, and his knowledge of the secondary material is extensive to such a degree that he can deftly portray the history of ideas not as something that comes down from "on high," but as a Great Conversation (how old-fashioned is that?)

"History and Experience" explores some of the more popular trends in nineteenth- and twentieth century historiography, including Dilthey's distinction between Naturwissenschaften and Geisteswissenschaften (arguably the distinction that launched modern historiographical discourse as we recognize it today), along with the ideas of Collingwood, Joan Wallach Scott, and Franklin Ankersmit. Collingwood's "The Idea of History" will inevitably be familiar to most, but the Scott and Ankersmit were new to this reader. Scott (coincidently the mother of New York Times film critic A. O. Scott) questions one of the most fundamental assumptions of all historians - the idea of the constituted subject who can entertain historical experience. Instead of taking for granted the idea of the knowing subject upon whom experience impinges itself (as had been done automatically by thinkers from Descartes to Kant), Scott argues the interpretative regimes of the historian are built, a la Foucault, not through a neutral intellective apparatus, but rather are shaped by, and in turn themselves shape, historical events. Franklin Ankersmit offers a subjective historiography of immediacy which blurs the lines between knower and known.

As the book proceeds into Bataille, Foucault, Adorno, and Benjamin, Jay detects a substantive disappearance of experience (at least experience as we have known it before) largely historically situated in the World War I and the years immediately thereafter. This renders the tone of the final chapters into something of a threnody for something lost.

Remarkable Book
By Mary Miley Theobald
Galapagos Diary was one Christmas present I couldn't seem to put down. Although I have never visited the Islands and have no special interest in wildlife, I found the pictures remarkable and the text compelling. I had no idea such unusual creatures inhabited the Galapagos Islands. The Blue Footed Boobies (now, really, who comes up with these names?) are my favorite with Great Frigatebirds coming in a close second. The book's young photographer, Barnaby Hall, is incredibly talented for his age--he looks to have been around 15 when he took these. What a professional job! I naturally recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos (it has a helpful section with sketches to help identify the birds and other wildlife), but also for anyone with a general interest in nature. If you like those Nature specials on television, this book is for you. As for me, I've added the Galapagos Islands to my list of Places to Go in the future!

A BIRD BOOK FOR "ALL"
By CARL SOUTHARD
"The Galapagos Diary" is a delightful book. It has two levels of reader focus. The "top" level of focus is targetted to the reader who desires to relax and see birds in their environment. It contains "portraits" of the bird population featuring photographs by Barnaby Hall. It appears to be designed for relaxation and enjoyment as opposed to detailed study. The second level appears to be intended for the "student." It uses a unique combination of photographs and sketches to present the characteristics of the Galapagos' birds, their actions, and their environment. The two-level focus of the volume makes the book a desirable gift, because it targets a wide range of readers with varying backgrounds, interests, and ages. You don't need to know how to spell ornithologist to enjoy it.

Comprehensive & Beautifully Illustrated
By L. Paul
Beginner or advanced wildflower botanist, there is something for everyone in this new field guide for California desert wildflowers. Each chapter is introduced with a stunning photo, followed by wildflower species grouped by family, genera, and species, rather than approximate color of the flower. This format enables the user to familiarize themselves with the characteristics and similarities between related species, leading to a better understanding of wildflower diversity and habitat adaptations. The book is illustrated with excellent photos taken almost exclusively by the authors. In addition to close up photos of the flowers, there's often an image showing the entire plant. This is very handy for identification purposes. The text is enriched by tidbits of information regarding usages of the plant, unusual features, etc. For those who wish to own only one field guide about desert wildflowers, this well-researched book should be the one. For those of us with "field-guide-itis," no collection would be complete without this volume on the reference shelf or in a daypack.

What Is Cinema?: Volume II, by André Bazin

André Bazin's What Is Cinema? (volumes I and II) have been classics of film studies for as long as they've been available and are considered the gold standard in the field of film criticism. Although Bazin made no films, his name has been one of the most important in French cinema since World War II. He was co-founder of the influential Cahiers du Cinéma, which under his leadership became one of the world's most distinguished publications. Championing the films of Jean Renoir (who contributed a short foreword to Volume I), Orson Welles, and Roberto Rossellini, he became the protégé of François Truffaut, who honors him touchingly in his forword to Volume II. This new edition includes graceful forewords to each volume by Bazin scholar and biographer Dudley Andrew, who reconsiders Bazin and his place in contemporary film study. The essays themselves are erudite but always accessible, intellectual, and stimulating. As Renoir puts it, the essays of Bazin "will survive even if the cinema does not."

Amazon.com Review
André Bazin is a great film critic and essayist, arguably the best France ever produced. His impact on the international cinema was monumental and continues to be felt today. He popularized the auteur theory, the idea that directors were the authors of their films. He was one of the first to take American "B"" movie genres, such as Westerns and films noir, seriously. He waxed eloquently on the Italian neorealist movement of the late '40s and '50s and inspired the "New Wave" of French directors, many of whom wrote for the journal he founded and edited, the legendary Cahiers du Cinema. François Truffaut dedicated The 400 Blows to him.

Bazin had a keen eye for cinematic detail and technique, but was also one of the cinema's great sociologists, psychologists, and historians. Volume two of What Is Cinema? collects some of his most characteristic writings. It contains essays on the aesthetic of neorealism; individual neorealist films by Vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, and Federico Fellini; the brilliance of Charlie Chaplin; and the mythmaking qualities of the Western. The volume ends with an appreciation of the great Jean Gabin and three essays on sex in the movies, including the delightful "Entomology of the Pin-Up Girl." Bazin's essays are short, smoothly written, revelatory, and filled with remarkable insights and a profound love for his subject.

Review
"Although Andre Bazin died shortly before the onset of what we now regard as the modern cinema, our understanding of this cinema wouldn't be the same without him. He's also one of the most scrupulous humanists and polemicists we've had, on a par with George Orwell, and these essays map out the busy highways we're all still navigating." - Jonathan Rosenbaum, film critic for the Chicago Reader"

"What Is Cinema? remains an invaluable—and beautiful—landmark in film and media studies. In both my research and my classrooms I return to these essays again and again—not only for the richness of their arguments but also for their passionate belief that the cinema is a form of revelation vital to our lives."—Vivian Sobchack, Professor, Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media, University of California, Los Angeles

What Is Cinema?
By john lynch
What is Cinema? Volume One and What is Cinema Volume 2 are English translations drawn from the original French four-volume work. They are not the entire four-volume work, but include some of the more important essays. In France itself, the four-volume work was later boiled to a one-volume set of selections. This French version was later used for the selections in the Spanish and Portuguese versions. The Italian version is different from the others, but also drawn from the four-volume work. Much of the four-volume original French work that has been omitted from the English What is Cinema? volumes I and II can be found in Cardullo's more recent collection "Bazin at Work."
Since Bazin's passing, film theory ventured more deeply into such things as semiotics, Freudian and Lacanian analyses, and sociological/Marxist perspectives. However, Bazin was one of the first and arguably most important writers to take film discourse beyond the "funny" "sexy" "scary" level. Some of the places film discourse has gone since the time of Bazin would be difficult or impossible for an unitiated person to comprehend. This is not so with Bazin, a man who also did such things as take Charlie Chaplin films to show at factories during lunch hour.
Although Bazin passed away more than 40 years ago, he remains relevant even if his writings have been subject to some critical analysis from writers like Brian Henderson and Noel Carroll. Moreover, in reading Bazin, one often has moments of recognition that are applicable to more recent things in the theatres; for example, a remark Bazin makes about Marilyn Monroe's skirt flying up is pertinent to discussion of the Austin Powers films, Bazin's remarks about such things as films about arctic expeditions, bullfighting documentaries, or films of Chinese executions may have a certain relevance in talking about the phenomenon of "The Blair Witch Project" . . .

Significant work - atrocious translation
By Theodoros Natsinas
André Bazin was one of the most important writers on film. His views have been influential worldwide. The term Bazinian realism has become one of the major theoretical categories in film studies. The impact of Bazin's work on English-language film studies has been generated, to a large degree, by this two-volume collection of essays. A number of major debates that have been going round for years now (decades actually) in English language works center on issues arising from these essays; e.g. the relation between objects and their photographs. However it must be stressed that these English language essays are re-workings by their "translator" rather than faithful renderings of the originals. Hugh Gray, the translator, not only chose some of the essays from the original French editions but also treated them with great liberty. Sentences and footnotes are missing, others are combined without reason; expressions are made more "flowery"; and meanings are changed. I cannot tell whether the translator was not up to the task of doing this job properly or he decided to mistreat his subject to such a degree consciously. In any case it is a great pity that Bazin's work is available in English only in this unfortunate form.
The original woks deserve 5 stars; it is impossible to decide how to rate this particular version.

What is cinema Vol. 2
By Javier A Arce Fernandez
Bazin is one of the best film philosophers and critics. He sensitively defines his notion of cinema as an evocative art, rather than necessarily a descriptive one. He choses a fine selection of films and filmmakers to talk about.

Homosexuality in Greece and Rome: A Sourcebook of Basic DocumentsFrom University of California Press

The most important primary texts on homosexuality in ancient Greece and Rome are translated into modern, explicit English and collected together for the first time in this comprehensive sourcebook. Covering an extensive period—from the earliest Greek texts in the late seventh century b.c.e. to Greco-Roman texts of the third and fourth centuries c.e.—the volume includes well-known writings by Plato, Sappho, Aeschines, Catullus, and Juvenal, as well as less well known but highly relevant and intriguing texts such as graffiti, comic fragments, magical papyri, medical treatises, and selected artistic evidence. These fluently translated texts, together with Thomas K. Hubbard's valuable introductions, clearly show that there was in fact no more consensus about homosexuality in ancient Greece and Rome than there is today.

The material is organized by period and by genre, allowing readers to consider chronological developments in both Greece and Rome. Individual texts each are presented with a short introduction contextualizing them by date and, where necessary, discussing their place within a larger work. Chapter introductions discuss questions of genre and the ideological significance of the texts, while Hubbard's general introduction to the volume addresses issues such as sexual orientation in antiquity, moral judgments, class and ideology, and lesbianism. With its broad, unexpurgated, and thoroughly informed presentation, this unique anthology gives an essential perspective on homosexuality in classical antiquity.

From the Inside Flap
"Professor Hubbard has had the generosity and good sense to include fragmentary as well as complete texts, and inscriptions and graffiti as well as properly literary works. The translations by divers hands faithfully represent an enormously wide range of genres and both high and colloquial styles, and the Greek and Latin texts are intelligently grouped into ten chapters by period and subject-matter, each introduced and annotated by the editor. There is an excellent selection of illustrations, including the fetishistic Roman-period Warren Cup recently purchased by the British Museum, that depicts both pederastic sodomy and voyeurism."—Paul Cartledge, author of Spartan Reflections

"It would be difficult to find a way to overstate the value of Hubbard’s contribution to our study of ancient sex and sexuality. Even those who think they know all about these topics are in for some surprises when they explore this vast collection of primary texts from the ancient Mediterranean world. Students, too, will find a great feast of information spread before them. The selection is comprehensive, and the English translations are carefully chosen. My first question, as I began to understand the nature of the sourcebook I held in my hands, was: Why has no one done this before?"—John T. Kirby, author of Secret of the Muses Retold

"Hubbard has achieved a remarkable feat. He has collected the literary and historical (and some artistic) evidence documenting same-sex eroticism in ancient Greece and Rome, in all its varieties. He introduces these sources to the general reader by period and author and analyzes controversial issues such as essentialism vs. social constructivism and the very rubric homosexuality, and he traces changing attitudes toward diverse homoerotic practices. His Sourcebook provides readers with just the right amount of background on changing social and political contexts from Greece to Rome, and introduces the full range of scholarship on a broad and important topic. It will fascinate and educate all those interested in the history of sexuality and, in practical terms, it will facilitate teaching and research in Gay Studies and indeed in Cultural Studies and Ancient History."—Nancy Felson, author of Regarding Penelope: From Character to Poetics

He introduces these sources to the general reader by period and author and analyzes controversial issues such as essentialism vs. social constructivism and the very rubrichomosexuality, and he traces changing attitudes toward diverse homoerotic practices. His Sourcebook provides readers with just the right amount of background on changing social and political contexts from Greece to Rome, and introduces the full range of scholarship on a broad and important topic. It will fascinate and educate all those interested in the history of sexuality and, in practical terms, it will facilitate teaching and research in Gay Studies and indeed in Cultural Studies and Ancient History."--Nancy Felson, author of "Regarding Penelope: From Character to Poetics

In Depth - Easy to read - Prose/Poems/Stories
By Jane
It is a long book but it is so skilfully written that the reader looks forward to the next page! It is broken up with little stories, poems, arguments and anecdotes from famous names and not so famous names all in different stages of wooing a boy.

It is interesting to read about Socrates, Plato and poems from ordinary men trying to woo their love interest. Some successfully..other poems show the anger with the boy or the loss of his love.

There are wonderful arguments and debates regardinge the erastes/eromenus relationship. There are anecdotes about cross-dressers, lesbians, male prostitutes, lesbians (not so much) and spurned lovers. There are lessons on how to be successful courting a boy...what to look for and what to expect. Only families of the wealthy allowed their boys to be courted.

There were many rules of courtship and in this world the boys' virtue is protected by the father until he approves of the suitor..or the boy accepts.

The descriptions of where men can meet boys: the gymnasia, the baths, and sleeping outside a potential lovers door!

The poetry is some of the most beautiful I have ever read.

So much information but easy to digest. So much was uncovered (excuse the pun)

It was wonderful to read actual notes and speeches from Socrates,Plato and others. It provided a vivid snapshot of male love in Ancient times.

A Much-Needed Work
By William A. Percy
Thomas Hubbard has produced the most significant anthology about Greek and Roman homosexuality ever. I had wanted to do such a book twenty years ago, but I lacked the skill. A master of the Greek tongue, he found the best translations of texts often misunderstood or bowdlerized, and when he couldn't find any, he translated them himself or commissioned others to do so. He additionally placed extensive and erudite introductions along with very useful bibliographic notes at the beginning of each of chapter. Each chapter is well footnoted, and as Hubbard says in his preface, "The footnotes are geared to a general undergraduate audience that has little previous knowledge of classical civilization and may need explanation of basic cultural artifacts or historical references. The notes also include points of interpretation, which should interest both the general and the more knowledgeable reader."

He effectively demolished the absurdities of John Boswell and David Halperin, and criticized the less reprehensible but still erroneous theses of Dover and Foucault. True, Hubbard did not do much with lesbianism, but then it didn't appear often in the sources. His subtle but devastating attacks on social constructionists, extreme feminists, lesbiterians, and Socarides, the other (dying-off) old-time American Freudians, and the child abuse industry make his work not only intellectually unassailable but socially and legally relevant. It is the first of its kind and will not conceivably be surpassed. Reviewers and others may over time be able to add a few items or even quibble a bit with the translations offered. It is plausible, at the most, that a second edition may be needed in a decade or two.

Politics of the Womb: Women, Reproduction, and the State in Kenya, by Lynn M. Thomas

In more than a metaphorical sense, the womb has proven to be an important site of political struggle in and about Africa. By examining the political significance—and complex ramifications—of reproductive controversies in twentieth-century Kenya, this book explores why and how control of female initiation, abortion, childbirth, and premarital pregnancy have been crucial to the exercise of colonial and postcolonial power. This innovative book enriches the study of gender, reproduction, sexuality, and African history by revealing how reproductive controversies challenged long-standing social hierarchies and contributed to the construction of new ones that continue to influence the fraught politics of abortion, birth control, female genital cutting, and HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Review
"In Thomas's skilled hands, and in her unabashed love of story-telling, intimate events in Kenya help us think more clearly and more critically about Africa in the twentieth century. The politics of the womb are at the core of the colonial experience and of colonial politics. . . . Africans struggled amongst themselves over the regulation of reproduction, and these layers of intimate strife, and the policies and protests emanating from London and mission hospitals and African homesteads, give us something we haven't had before--a gendered and transnational colonial history."

A Novel and Necessary Analysis
By Ceek
By understanding what we commonly call "Female Genital Mutilation" instead as a form of "initiation," Thomas attempts to wrest the practice free from a hundred years of Western colonial and post-colonial censure. Instead, she makes a persuasive case for initiation as residing within a complex and changing nexus of concerns about gender, generation, and class. Debates between colonial and anti-colonial interests, in this way, are marginalized and complicated, and Thomas is able to tell a more nuanced story of struggles over women's reproductive rights.

While I thought Thomas's approach to the subject matter was suitably novel, I felt her analysis didn't always match the theoretical standards she sets out in her introduction. Despite claiming to draw from Foucault and his conception of bio-power, this connection was not made explicit in her analysis; likewise for her stated concern about the problems of representing Kenyans' "voice." She name checks the right subaltern studies academics, but does not play their ideas explicitly against hers.

Nonetheless, this is an important and innovative contribution to African history that can help us better understand the complexities embedded in debates about reproduction in Kenya and Africa

Mexico: A Brief History, by Alicia Hernández Chávez

Beginning with the pre-Hispanic period and ending with the latest democratic developments of the twenty-first century, this definitive one-volume history of Mexico analyzes the ways that economic, social, and political dynamics have interacted to shape the nation's past. Alicia Hernández Chávez takes into account new historiography—which is fully integrated with anthropology, political science, economics, and international relations—to present an original and fresh interpretation of the structures and processes that determined the country's evolution. Based on the latest sources in both Spanish and other languages, this book illustrates that Mexico's history—far from being one of violent change, uprisings, and revolution—tended more toward stability and political collaboration. Hernández Chávez argues that Mexicans relied on tradition and institutions to effect change, resorting to disorder and destruction as little as possible. Numerous maps, tables, and charts support the text, providing extensive information on geography, social structures, the economy, politics, education, health, and transportation.

A thoughtful book, but probably a little difficult for beginners
By El Viejo Topo
It's good to have a history of Mexico in English which is written by a Mexican scholar. It tends to reflect the concerns of Mexicans rather than the fashionable obsessions of academics in the United States or Great Britain, and these are, for the most part, more taken with politics, power, and socieconomic questions than with race, class and gender. And that's the real strength of this history: it isn't afraid to talk about the evolution and mechanics of the PRI, so it is immediately easier for an outsider to understand its durability as a political machine. It's also quite perceptive in the way it sets the table for the so-called "Mexican Miracle" of 1940-1970: Hernandez Chavez understands that the changes that were wrought by the Revolution and, in particular, by Lazaro Cardenas (1934-1940) were crucial to the success of the economic model, however one regards those results in terms of equity or efficiency. It's also, blessedly, not a history cursed by neoclassical teleology: the development model employed in Mexico must have been "wrong" because things went sour in the 1980s. Sorry, not so. Go back and look at Clark Reynolds classic book published in 1970 on the Mexican economy: if there was trouble in Paradise, Reynolds, nobody's fool, didn't see it coming. In fact, there were intimations of structural problems in some of the analyses floating around after the Tlatelolco massacre in 1968, but no one seemed to think they were insuperable--and that's probably because they weren't. Hernandez Chaves is also openly skeptical of the "nothing but decline" model of Mexico after 1810, and even if you don't buy her analysis, well, you suspect her skepticism is not misplaced, and closer to a Mexican account of things. So what's not to like? The book is a textbook, but it's not a textbook for beginners. Someone who already is in on the kinds of things that academics discuss--like other professionals--will not doubt find this book to be the best one volume history available in English, because it is. But if you know nothing about Mexico, this is probably not a good place to begin: my experience is that its strengths (broad but detailed coverage, sophisticated thinking, ample data) will probably overwhelm a neophyte. On the other hand, if you're ambitious, go for it. You'll get some insight into how Mexicans see their history, which, frankly, is about the only perspective that really matters.

Glad I purchased this used. Difficult for a PhD to decipher.
By Interested Reader
Don't bother with this. This book is either poorly translated or poorly written...Hard to tell. It is difficult to follow and lacks any pattern of organization. I was looking at this book as a possible supplementary text for college students. It would never work, even for advanced students. I'm a PhD and lost on page 10 of this book.

Passable
By Alex Parton
I read this to get a general overview of Mexican history. It does cover all the major events but in trying to be completely unbiased, this book comes off as practically useless. Porifiro Diaz was a dictator. It's unnecessary to be 'unbiased' about that. I only finished this because I'd already bought it and didn't want to buy another general survey book.
