Dancing with Ghosts: A Critical Biography of Arturo Islas, by Frederick Luis Aldama

This first critical biography of Arturo Islas (19381991) brings to life the complex and overlapping worlds inhabited by the gay Chicano poet, novelist, scholar, and professor. Gracefully written and deeply researched, Dancing with Ghosts considers both the larger questions of Islas's life—his sexuality, racial identification, and political personality—and the events of his everyday existence, from his childhood in the borderlands of El Paso to his adulthood in San Francisco and at Stanford University. Frederick Aldama portrays the many facets of Islas's engaging and often contradictory personality. He also explores Islas's coming into the craft of poetry and fiction—his extraordinary struggle to publish his novels, The Rain God, La Mollie and the King of Tears, and Migrant Souls—as well as his pivotal role in paving the way for a new generation of Chicano/a scholars and writers.

Through a skillful interweaving of life history, criticism, and literary theory, Aldama paints an unusually rich and wide-ranging portrait of both the man and the eventful times in which he lived. He describes Islas's struggle with polio as a child, his near-death experience and ileostomy as a thirty-year-old beginning to explore his queer sexuality in San Francisco in the 1970s, and his fatal struggle with AIDS in the late 1980s. Drawing from hundreds of unpublished letters, lecture notes, drafts of essays, novels, and poetry archived at Stanford University, Aldama also deals frankly with the controversies that swirled around Islas's impassioned love life, his drug addictions, and his scholarly and professional career as one of the first Chicano/a professors in the United States. He discusses the importance of Islas's pioneering role in bridging Anglo, Latin American, Chicano/a, and European storytelling styles and voices. Dancing with Ghosts succeeds brilliantly both as an account of a fascinating life that embraced many different worlds and as a chronicle of the grand historical shifts that transformed the late-twentieth-century American cultural landscape.

"Arturo Islas identified variously as writer, hedonist, Chicano, academic, gay, Catholic, and aesthete, crossing the borders between these roles with thoughtful abandon. His dark life shines brilliantly in Frederick Aldama's Dancing with Ghosts. To know Islas intimately is to understand a life lived fully and painfully, one whose literary legacy touches us still."—Tom Miller, author of On the Border: Portraits of America's Southwestern Frontier

"Danicing with Ghosts is a brilliant excursion into the life of critically acclaimed Chicano writer, Arturo Islas. Author Frederick Aldama weaves a textured narrative of a life marked by brilliance and illness; talent and addictions; writing and sexuality. Aldama's work sensitively and splendidly reconstructs the biography of a talented poet/novelist and in so doing provides the reader with a different cartography of the Chicano/a experience."—Maria Herrera-Sobek, author of The Mexican Corrido: A Feminist Analysis

A Seminal Biographical Study
By Daniel Olivas
Frederick Luis Aldama notes that he could have written a hagiography because of Arturo Islas' "sensational and melodramatic 'up-from-the-bootstraps' story and its tragic denouement." But that would have been dishonest. Despite his talents as a writer, Islas was plagued with self-hate and was often moody, manipulative, narcissistic and unpredictable. Yet he could be brilliant, gentle, soft-spoken and, above all, generous. Aldama succeeds in synthesizing the disparate elements of Arturo Islas to produce what doubtless will become a seminal biographical study of an important figure in Chicano letters. The Curious Feminist: Searching for Women in a New Age of Empire, by Cynthia Enloe

In this collection of lively essays, Cynthia Enloe makes better sense of globalization and international politics by taking a deep and personal look into the daily realities in a range of women's lives. She proposes a distinctively feminist curiosity that begins with taking women seriously, especially during this era of unprecedented American influence. This means listening carefully, digging deep, challenging assumptions, and welcoming surprises. Listening to women in Asian sneaker factories, Enloe reveals, enables us to bring down to earth the often abstract discussions of the global economy. Paying close attention to Iraqi women's organizing efforts under military occupation exposes the false global promises made by officials. Enloe also turns the beam of her inquiry inward. In a series of four candid interviews and a new set of autobiographical pieces, she reflects on the gradual development of her own feminist curiosity. Describing her wartime suburban girlhood and her years at Berkeley, she maps the everyday obstacles placed on the path to feminist consciousness—and suggests how those obstacles can be identified and overcome.

The Curious Feminist shows how taking women seriously also challenges the common assumption that masculinities are trivial factors in today's international affairs. Enloe explores the workings of masculinity inside organizations as diverse as the American military, a Serbian militia, the UN, and Oxfam. A feminist curiosity finds all women worth thinking about, Enloe claims. She suggests that we pay thoughtful attention to women who appear complicit in violence or in the oppression of others, or too cozily wrapped up in their relative privilege to inspire praise or compassion. Enloe's vitality, passion, and incisive wit illuminate each essay. The Curious Feminist is an original and timely invitation to look at global politics in an entirely different way.

From Publishers Weekly
In her collection of essays on international politics, militarism and globalization, Enloe (author of Bananas, Beaches and Bases: Making Feminist Sense of International Politics) exhibits an open-minded curiosity about how a gendered investigation reveals critical dimensions of these topics. With her logical, unadorned style, she makes the argument that the U.S. is a militarized nation where "‘commander in chief’ is the essence of the U.S. presidency" and "manipulations of manliness often shape foreign policy decision-making." This preoccupation with asserting masculinity, she contends, plays a role not only in U.S. foreign policy, but in economic strategies of American companies: she points to a period between the 1960s and the mid-1980s when Nike, Reebok and various other sneaker companies depended on Korean women’s espousal of Confucian philosophy, which "measured a woman’s morality by her willingness to work hard for her family’s well-being and to acquiesce to her father’s and husband’s dictates," to motivate them to work for unfairly low wages in U.S.-owned factories. In addition to these essays, the collection includes several transcripts of conversations with Enloe, which offer a glimpse into her opinions on how the subjects of gender and international relations are approached in academia, where she sees students increasingly becoming aware that "leaving out the serious asking of the gender question probably will mean that their theorizing about international politics will be not just incomplete. It will be unreliable." Her insightful and accessible explorations of the ethnic conflict in Bosnia, the emerging U.S. "empire" in Afghanistan and Iraq, and other global issues should appeal not only to feminists, but to anyone interested in politics and how it relates to gender. 9 b&w photos.

Review
"With an unwavering gender optic Cynthia Enloe examines a number of themes and issues bearing on what a feminist curiosity can show you in international relations and political studies. Throughout this collection of essays, Enloe both articulates and exemplifies her philosophy that knowledge comes out of ordinary people's experiences and that it's important to pay attention to what the marginal and silent can tell us." - Cynthia Cockburn, author of The Space Between Us; "The book is a sensitive gendered analysis of interlocking developments from globalized economic markets to war and post-conflict dynamics. Enloe convincingly shows the links between and importance of women's everyday lives." - Carolyn Nordstrom, author of Shadows of War"

From the Inside Flap
"The book is a sensitive gendered analysis of interlocking developments from globalized economic markets to war and post-conflict dynamics. While Enloe's book brings out the complexities of women's positions in a very immediate way as they play out in large scale platforms of power, survival, politics, and profit, she also convincingly shows the links between and importance of women's everyday lives."—Carolyn Nordstrom, author of Shadows of War: Violence, War, and International Profiteering in the Twenty-First Century

"With an unwavering gender optic Cynthia Enloe examines a number of themes and issues bearing on what a feminist curiosity can show you in international relations and political studies. Throughout this collection of essays, Enloe both articulates and exemplifies her philosophy that knowledge comes out of ordinary people's experiences, and that it's important to pay attention to what the marginal and silent can tell us."—Cynthia Cockburn, author of The Space Between Us: Negotiating Gender and National Identities in Conflict

"Enloe's knack of laying out simply the tangled webs of connection that link the poor and the rich, the marginal and the privileged, masculine enterprise and female exploitation, is unsurpassed. This is feminist scholarship at its very, very best: fresh, lively, uncompromising and tremendously readable."—Philippa Levine, author of Prostitution, Race and Politics: Policing Venereal Disease in the British Empire

"Brilliant, funny, and energizing, these essays take us on a whirlwind and solidarity-building tour of the world of women today. En route, Enloe reveals the intellectual and political benefits of being relentlessly curious, open-minded, and humble. The confidence of the powerful and the naturalness of a world with men in charge will not seem the same after reading this book.”—Catherine Lutz, author of Homefront: A Military City and the American 20th Century

"At the heart of this book is a challenge to patriarchal systems that privilege masculinity and marginalize critical feminist voices. Enloe encourages all of us to consider not just what we study, but how we study the world in this new age of empire and to pay attention to not just the powerful, but to 'the bottom rungs'."—Steven Lamy, Director, School of International Relations, University of Southern California

Bound for Freedom: Black Los Angeles in Jim Crow America, by Douglas Flamming

Paul Bontemps decided to move his family to Los Angeles from Louisiana in 1906 on the day he finally submitted to a strictly enforced Southern custom—he stepped off the sidewalk to allow white men who had just insulted him to pass by. Friends of the Bontemps family, like many others beckoning their loved ones West, had written that Los Angeles was "a city called heaven" for people of color. But just how free was Southern California for African Americans?

This splendid history, at once sweeping in its historical reach and intimate in its evocation of everyday life, is the first full account of Los Angeles's black community in the half century before World War II. Filled with moving human drama, it brings alive a time and place largely ignored by historians until now, detailing African American community life and political activism during the city's transformation from small town to sprawling metropolis.

Writing with a novelist's sensitivity to language and drawing from fresh historical research, Douglas Flamming takes us from Reconstruction to the Jim Crow era, through the Great Migration, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and the build-up to World War II. Along the way, he offers rich descriptions of the community and its middle-class leadership, the women who were front and center with men in the battle against racism in the American West.

In addition to drawing a vivid portrait of a little-known era, Flamming shows that the history of race in Los Angeles is crucial for our understanding of race in America. The civil rights activism in Los Angeles laid the foundation for critical developments in the second half of the century that continue to influence us to this day.

Definitive History of Black Los Angeles
By Rick Warner
Douglas Flamming has done scholars, historians, and the public a favor by putting out the first in-depth and fully accessible history of African Americans in Los Angeles.

In his work, Flamming focuses on the life of Charlotta Bass, the editor and publisher of the California Eagle newspaper. She came to Los Angeles in 1910 and died in 1969, and saw the world change around her. She was also an activist who sought to improve the lives of African Americans in southern California. But she did not do it alone. Flamming also tells us the stories of Fred Roberts, John and Vada Somerville and the indefatigable Betty Hill.

He also describes the famous places, such as the busy life on Central Avenue before it became known as South Central. There was the Dunbar Hotel, the only place black people could stay in during those years, and the nationally famous jazz club, the Club Alabam, which was a magnet for the biggest names in the country.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you are a student of Black history, California history, or life in Los Angeles just before and after World War II, get this book. Even if you are not, it is still a great read (aside from being thoroughly documented).

Spirits of Protestantism: Medicine, Healing, and Liberal Christianity (The Anthropology of Christianity), by Pamela E. Klassen

Spirits of Protestantism reveals how liberal Protestants went from being early-twentieth-century medical missionaries seeking to convert others through science and scripture, to becoming vocal critics of missionary arrogance who experimented with non-western healing modes such as Yoga and Reiki. Drawing on archival and ethnographic sources, Pamela E. Klassen shows how and why the very notion of healing within North America has been infused with a Protestant "supernatural liberalism." In the course of coming to their changing vision of healing, liberal Protestants became pioneers three times over: in the struggle against the cultural and medical pathologizing of homosexuality; in the critique of Christian missionary triumphalism; and in the diffusion of an ever-more ubiquitous anthropology of "body, mind, and spirit." At a time when the political and anthropological significance of Christianity is being hotly debated, Spirits of Protestantism forcefully argues for a reconsideration of the historical legacies and cultural effects of liberal Protestantism, even for the anthropology of religion itself.

“Klassen’s book is much more than a first-rate study of how two churches in Canada positioned themselves within the ostensibly parallel worlds of biomedicine and spiritual healing. It is, at its core, an insightful meditation on the relationship between liberal Protestantism and the project of modernity. A must read not only for students of Christianity, but all those interested in the legacies of secularism and enchantment." —Matthew Engelke, London School of Economics

Laughter Out of Place: Race, Class, Violence, and Sexuality in a Rio Shantytown (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Donna M. Go

Donna M. Goldstein challenges much of what we think we know about the "culture of poverty." Drawing on more than a decade of experience in Brazil, Goldstein provides an intimate portrait of everyday life among the women of the favelas, or urban shantytowns. These women have created absurdist and black-humor storytelling practices in the face of trauma and tragedy. Goldstein helps us to understand that such joking and laughter is part of an emotional aesthetic that defines the sense of frustration and anomie endemic to the political and economic desperation of the shantytown.

Laughter and Life in a Favela
By Carlos D. Tores
Within the first few pages of Laughter Out of Place, I realized that Dr. Goldstein was going to embark on ethnographic analysis in a more personal vein. The introduction reads like a personal reflection of her time spent in "Felicidade Eterna," folding in memories of the people she met into a journal-styled ethnography, of the kind introduced to us by Ruth Behar. I found Donna's approach refreshing: a reader knew where she stood on issues, and there were no concealed objectivities in her observations. Donna's personality comes through in her writing in her style -which does not back away from harsh realities, nor delve into idealized or romanticized metaphors for Brazilian music, sex, or style. I found large scale conclusions were lacking, but her small conclusions peppered within her dialogue were cogent: clearly understood and explained by her observations.
Looking at the book's format in an overall construction, I thought she made an interesting and deliberate choice in segmenting the book around particular phenomena of favela culture. The overarching concept - of laughter in the favelas that seemed to be out of place - ran through the book, but other subjects like the aesthetics of domination, black cinderelllas, short-term childhoods, gangs and violence, and the carnivalization of desire focused the book into themes particularized to the society of the favela. The choice of these themes and I can guess were synthesized from coded observations. The phenomena addressed were concrete and drew Donna's discursive writing style along into interesting, relevant, and "involving" territory. She used theory to bolster her arguments, but didn't saddle the story with overwhelming treatises. The choice of ethnographic writing - employing themes - makes me curious though. Does the use of themes artificially differentiate the life in the favela from our own, or other social conditions where poverty subjugates its population? Are we getting a picture of what life is like there, or rather of what particularizes life in the favela from our existences?
Admittedly though the book is seductive in drawing the reader into the discussion. And issues touched upon in the book can be applied to many other geographies. Donna does not try to ingratiate herself in pure relativism, as she says, she is often shocked by the ironic attitudes of the people who seem to accept their fate much more humorously than Donna imagined prior to her experience in Felicidade. She takes issue with some theortists, including Foucault, presenting and then unraveling their theoretical positioning. She also disparages the study of elites, or "cosmopolitan intellectuals, or transnational social movements" as a form of "ethnographic refusal," and a condition "that would fail to provide density to our representations, sanitize politics," or produce "thin version of culture with a set of dissolving actors" (43). Donna does not hold back.
In her review of Donna Goldstein's book, Nancy Shepar-Hughes mentions that Golstein's book will not come without controversy because it may be painted in a "culture-of-poverty" conceptual framework. But I don't see that happening in this case because Goldstein concentrates on the conditions of life and the subsequent actions of people mired in a difficult situation and in the fragile structure of the favela. Donna is also quick to point out that she herself does not understand - at all times - the social structures in place. For example, out of generosity Donna sets aside some money for Soneca to attend a computer institute. The idea does not succeed and Gloria, the main informant of the book, is annoyed by the waste of valuable resources.
Donna also employs modern electronic resources to make her point, and bring the reader directly into current attitudes and stereotyping concerning "Brazilian Mulatas." She enters a search engine with those exact two words and finds dozens of porn sites exemplifying popular viewpoints related to sexuality in Brazil. She points out many of the inconsistentsies and ironic attitudes present in the favelas regarding sexuality and race. Gloria, for instance, views the white coroa taking on a dark skinned lover as evidence for a "reluctance of Afro-Brazilian women to interpret certain kinds of interactions as racist" (124).
While all of the discussion in Laughter Out of Place is interesting, for me the discussions on violence and gangs are/were most relevant in a changing second and third world. One can imagine the "trajectory into criminality by young men as a form of local knowledge (and as a vehicle for advancement)..." (203). Indeed, after the descriptions given of the lifestyle, poverty, abuse, and of course humor that saturate the favela, one can clearly see the seductive link of falling into gang violence and criminality. Donna also clearly demonstrates the functionality of bandit existence, quoting and borrowing from Hobsbawm the reasoning behind the formation of "primitive rebels:" "Social banditry becomes a form of self-help in the context of economic crises and social tension" (209).
In Donna's short but cogent conclusion she does not try to offer monumental solutions to the problems she sees, but nevertheless her astute observations and solutions provided are idealistic and perhaps unrealistic. She points to endemic problems in the favela such as the "differential application of the rule of law," and the need to "reform policing forces" bringing an end to corruption and abuse" (273). She points out that in order for drug traffickers and gangs to be removed from the favela, "'good faith' social services need to be put in place to treat the everyday private injustices that are currently being handled by such organizations" (274). Like so many impoverished societies, an infrastructure or support girdle of municipal services needs to be put in place (or reformed) to aid all segments of the society of Rio. This remains a common need for societies battling poverty. Great ethnography and seductive reading examining a micro-world of global inequality.

Up close and personal with Brazilian culture
By Hanna
Laughter Out of Place is a wonderful ethnography in a number of ways. It captures an incredible depth of understanding of lives of the urban poor women and their families in a favela. It reveals the complexity of their predicaments, and their predicaments are many:

How can one try to move up in the society without reproducing the beliefs about black female sexual allure?

How can Gloria keep her children in line, out of prison and alive but also how can she prevent them from joining a gang?

How can she inflict harsh punishments on her children and at the same time witness the perpetual pampering of the middle and upper class children?

How can young men in the favela stay out of gangs in a situation where there are virtually no economic opportunities for them and they are constantly criminalized by the elite?

How can middle and upper classes stop their dependence on domestic workers without lowering their own class standing?

How can the women in the favela break the cycle of domination and refuse domestic work when sex work is one of the only other viable alternatives for them?

How can a black consciousness movement develop among people who believe that calling someone 'black' is an insult?

These are just a few of very complex predicaments that Laughter Out of Place reveals to the reader through a great depth of analysis and wonderful story-telling.

What might be most interesting, however, is that even though so much of the book is about violence -- either actual or symbolic -- Goldstein chose the lens of humor through which to cast the story. This choice might seem odd at the first glance but at the end of the book it is clear that the framework of humor as a survivalist strategy and also as a place of disjunction between aesthetics of the poor and aesthetics of the middle and upper classes brings all aspects of Goldstein?s work together. This book is also written with a clarity of thought that I believe will draw both academic and non-academic audiences.

must-read for Brazilian on-lookers
By ann eastman
Laughter out of Place is crucial reading for those interested in exploring the hardships of Brazil and the spunk that keeps a population of oppressed and impoverished people dancing, singing, and always eager to laugh. Goldstein takes the reader through the gutters and alleys of a Rio shantytown, sharing years of experience as both a fieldworker, and a personal friend to many of the book's feisty characters. Laughter portrays the unbearableness of shantytown life and how it is expressed through laughter, ridicule, and trickery that seem inappropriate to outsiders.
From my own experience of living and working in a Brazilian shantytown, I can with say confidence that Laughter out of Place is an authentic and well-researched exploration of shantytown survival tactics in Brazil. For any person interested in learning about the Brazil that lies outside of Carnival and beautiful beaches, this book is your transport.

Dark Side of Fortune: Triumph and Scandal in the Life of Oil Tycoon Edward L. Doheny, by Margaret Leslie Davis

Dark Side of Fortune contains all the elements of a Hollywood thriller. Filling in one of the most important gaps in the history of the American West, Margaret Leslie Davis's riveting biography follows Edward L. Doheny's fascinating story from his days as an itinerant prospector in the dangerous jungles of Mexico, where he built the $100-million oil empire that ushered in the new era of petroleum. But it was a tale that ended in tragedy, when—at the peak of his economic power—Doheny was embroiled in the notorious Teapot Dome scandal and charged with bribing the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

Few captains of industry have matched Doheny's drive to succeed and his far-reaching ambition. Drawn to the West in search of fortune, he failed at prospecting before finding oil in a smelly, tar-befouled lot in Los Angeles in 1892. Certain that the substance had commercial value, he envisioned steamships and locomotives no longer powered by coal, but by oil. After developing massive oil wells in Mexico, Doheny built an international oil empire that made him one of the wealthiest men in the world. But in 1924 the scandal of Teapot Dome engulfed him. As accusations mounted, he hired America's top legal talent for his defense. During the ten-year-long litigation, Doheny's only son was mysteriously murdered by a family confidant. The government's case against Doheny ended in an astounding jury decision: The cabinet official accused of taking a bribe from Doheny was found guilty and sent to prison, yet Doheny was fully acquitted. Despite the verdict, the scandal had overshadowed the achievements of a lifetime, and he died in disgrace in 1935.

Margaret Leslie Davis recreates the legal drama and adds details of behind-the-scenes strategy gleaned from the personal diaries and archives of Doheny's famed defense attorneys. Previously hidden personal correspondence adds to this first complete portrait of the man and answers questions about Doheny that have eluded historians for almost seventy-five years.

From Booklist
Oilman Edward L. Doheny, fellow oil millionaire Harry Sinclair, and Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall were the infamous trio indicted in the Teapot Dome scandal. However, unlike the other two, Doheny never served time in prison. In this account of the scandal and its aftermath and effect on Doheny and his family, Davis, author of Rivers in the Desert: William Mulholland and the Inventing of Los Angeles (1993), provides a sympathetic background of Doheny's life and career. Although Doheny was not involved in the Teapot Dome oil reserve (Sinclair was), he had managed to secure drilling rights to two other naval oil reserves, which became linked to Teapot Dome in the broadening scandal. As a consequence, Doheny's federal contracts were voided and the most bizarre paradox in U.S. legal history resulted: in separate trials, Fall was convicted of taking a $100,000 bribe from Doheny, but Doheny was found not guilty of offering the bribe. Although not an outright historical revision, this book's tone is very close, and its aim is to rehabilitate Doheny's reputation. Frank Caso

From Kirkus Reviews
California historian Davis (Rivers in the Desert: William Mulholland and the Inventing of Los Angeles, 1993) revisits Teapot Dome, the cause clbre that began in the time of Warren Harding, to tell the story of one of the scandal's prominent actors, now largely forgotten. As the Gilded Age turned into the Jazz Age, Edward Doheny, hitherto a feckless prospector, peered into the La Brea tar pits and saw a fortune. He punched the first hole for oil in the city of Los Angeles. Successful, he turned to wildcat drilling in the jungles of Mexico. Gusher followed gusher and the shrewd Doheny became wonderfully rich, the master of a great mansion, a private railroad car, and all the accoutrements of great wealth. It was a world of puissant bigwigs, of powerful cronies, extravagantly mustachioed. It happened one day that the oilman transmitted $100,000 in cash to a cash-poor old crony, Albert Fall, who was then Harding's secretary of the interior. He called it a loan. Just about the same time, the Department of the Interior granted Doheny's company favorable leases in fields dedicated to naval oil reserves. Harry Sinclair, another oilman, obtained similar leases in a field known as Teapot Dome for its odd rock formation. When the deals came to light, a battle between conservationists and exploiters erupted. A Senate investigation turned the transactions into scandal, and civil and criminal trials followed. Fall took the Fifth, but was jailed anyway. Sinclair did time, too. Doheny, though, was found innocent of any criminality. His story and that of his family and friends is told expertly, though with a clearly sympathetic bias, while some questions remain (e.g., why was the ``loan'' made in cash?). Drawing on a new-found trove of Dohenys personal correspondence, and well researched and narrated, this revisionist biography is an interesting addition to the social history of the times. Review
"This biography of oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny reads like a novel, and fittingly so. For the life story of this brilliant, driven entrepreneur is the stuff of fiction. . . . Davis craft[s] a spellbinding account of Doheny's rise to fame, power and fantastic wealth--and his fall from grace as a key figure in the Teapot Dome scandal that shattered the presidency of Warren D. Harding. [This] fascinating narrative will enrich the historical record while appealing to casual readers who enjoy tales of wealth, fame and political intrigue."--John Flesher, "Foreword"

The Devil in History: Communism, Fascism, and Some Lessons of the Twentieth Century, by Vladimir Tismaneanu

The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the author’s personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth century’s experiments in social engineering. Vladimir Tismaneanu brilliantly compares communism and fascism as competing, sometimes overlapping, and occasionally strikingly similar systems of political totalitarianism. He examines the inherent ideological appeal of these radical, revolutionary political movements, the visions of salvation and revolution they pursued, the value and types of charisma of leaders within these political movements, the place of violence within these systems, and their legacies in contemporary politics.

The author discusses thinkers who have shaped contemporary understanding of totalitarian movements—people such as Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, François Furet, Tony Judt, Ian Kershaw, Leszek Kolakowski, Richard Pipes, and Robert C. Tucker. As much a theoretical analysis of the practical philosophies of Marxism-Leninism and Fascism as it is a political biography of particular figures, this book deals with the incarnation of diabolically nihilistic principles of human subjugation and conditioning in the name of presumably pure and purifying goals. Ultimately, the author claims that no ideological commitment, no matter how absorbing, should ever prevail over the sanctity of human life. He comes to the conclusion that no party, movement, or leader holds the right to dictate to the followers to renounce their critical faculties and to embrace a pseudo-miraculous, a mystically self-centered, delusional vision of mandatory happiness.

Review
"[A] fine and undoubtedly enduring study."--William Pfaff"New York Review of Books" (06/20/2013)

"This volume achieves the rare distinction of being at once nuanced and impassioned. It is likely to remain a durable contribution to a deeper understanding of the great historical outrages of the past century which were closely linked to the concept and reality of totalitarianism."--Paul Hollander"New Criterion" (04/01/2013)

"An ambitious and challenging rereading of twentieth-century history."--John Gray"Times Literary Supplement (TLS)" (01/02/2012)

"A definitive account of the origins, the appeal, the doctrinal foundations and the political technology of history's two bloodiest political faiths . . . this profound and rich book is also a cautionary tale."--Leon Aron"Wall Street Journal" (01/12/2013)

"The parallels between communism and fascism have often been noted, fueling endless debates over whether the movements were fundamentally similar or different. The Devil in History . . . presents a genuinely fresh perspective on this topic."--Andrew Nagorski"Foreign Affairs" (01/01/2013)

"At a time when liberal values are showing their frailty and salvationist mythologies are returning to favour in different places, an absorbing comparative essay is provided on the origins, ravages and ultimate failure of the radical totalitarian movements of the last century: communism and fascism. Vladimir Tismaneanu is an appropriate guide, a polymath steeped in the philosophical, literary and social science texts spawned by defenders, apostates and analysts of this phenomenon."--Tom Gallagher"International Affairs" (09/01/2012)

"Tismaneanu's real concern is to examine what he calls the 'maximalist utopian aspirations' expressed by communist and fascist regimes in Europe to try to understand how it is that systems that set out with a utopian agenda--world revolution or national rebirth--end up constructing murderous dystopias. There is a consensus in the Western world that these were 'delusional visions', as Tismaneanu calls them, but both European communism and fascism have died as mainstream political forces, making it easier to see them as deluded. The core of this perceptive and intelligent analysis is addressed to the more troubling question of how they were possible at all."--Richard Overy"Times Higher Education" (09/13/2012)

"The book offers a fascinating read with an incredible wealth of bibliographic sources that will benefit all those interested in the topic. The author has succeeded in giving not only a solid account of the spirituality and history of communist and fascist regimes, but also an outstanding testimony of liberal political and normative thinking."--Camil Roman"Cambridge Review of International Affairs" (05/08/2013)

"Many books have been written about the similarities and differences between communism and fascism, both in theory and practice. None, however, matches the insight, analysis, and deep thought found in The Devil in History."--Ronald Radosh"Weekly Standard" (08/12/2013)

"Tismaneanu seeks to fulfill the ancient Jewish commandment of remembering and reminding, zachor, lest we forget and it may return. . . . Tismaneanu argues convincingly that a reckoning with the past can be both exorcism and therapy, and insists that there should be no silence or thick line separating the present from the embarrassing past. No reader of this book can accuse its author of ignoring the past."--Aviezer Tucker"Perspectives on Politics" (12/01/2013)

"Tismaneanu's lucid narrative walks us through an intellectual landscape that traces the trajectory of totalitarian thinking back to its origins."--J. P. O Malley"The Daily Beast" (09/28/2012)"

"[A] fine and undoubtedly enduring study. This affinity of Leninism with Nazism is the argument of Tismaneanu s book. It is a claim that since 1945, and particularly the Cold War, has generated much controversy. A distinguished book."--William Pfaff"New York Review of Books" (06/20/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
“Vladimir Tismaneanu combines enormous erudition, sharp insight, and unique personal experience in this wide-ranging essay on the problems of totalitarianism in the twentieth century. The Devil in History is mandatory reading for those interested in the crucial questions of morality and politics posed by the comparison of Nazism and Stalinism.” —Norman M. Naimark, Robert and Florence McDonnel Professor of Eastern European Studies, Stanford University

“The Devil in History is a lengthy essay on the intellectual origins, crimes, and failures of the twentieth century’s worst totalitarian types of regimes, fascism and communism. There are few scholars as conversant with this material, or as able to explain it as well, as Vladimir Tismaneanu, who gives a good sense of why utopian ideals meant to overcome the ills of capitalist, bourgeois democracy went so sensationally wrong and produced such massive evil.” —Daniel Chirot, co-author of Why Not Kill Them All? The Logic and Prevention of Mass Political Murder

"The Devil in History is a very important work of intellectual history that considers a basic question of the twentieth century and represents vast and ecumenical learning and well-considered personal experience. It has moments of indubitable brilliance." —Timothy Snyder, author of The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999

“In his revealing new study, Vladimir Tismaneanu traces the intellectual origins of the murderous twentieth century. The focus is on the ideologies of Europe’s totalitarian regimes identified most prominently with the names Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler. Although these characters were amoral and perhaps even psychopathic killers, the author rightly insists that such labels do not explain the popular appeal of the dictators, who were worshipped as if they were gods by crowds of true believers. Even after 1945, new Communist leaders pursued quests for utopia and mounted crusades of their own, all of them doomed to fail. Tismaneanu provides a compelling and convincing account of how this monumental tragedy came to pass.” —Robert Gellately, author of Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler: The Age of Social Catastrophe

Tismaneanu at his best!
By Peter Stone
Vladimir Tismaneanu is a celebrated writer who once described himself as "a scholar of the history of ideas." For some, that subject might sound kind of remote from real life; but certainly not for those who are aware that "ideas which seize the masses become a powerful material force." Tismaneanu's new book convincingly shows that history of ideas is a subject of vital importance for the fate of the world.

In the past one hundred years, our world has suffered from atrocities and destruction of unprecedented scope - all committed in the name of two utopian ideas, communism and fascism. This book examines the question how captivating ideas of philosophers could produce totalitarian regimes with their terrible inhuman practices.

This work marks a new level of excellence in Vladimir Tismaneanu's writing accomplishments. It has instantly gained international recognition and got featured by Times Higher Education as "the book of the week," praised for its "perceptive and intelligent analysis."

Hitler's and Stalin's totalitarian regimes are long gone, but not genocidal acts inspired by hatred and intolerance. Delusional and destructive ideas can still captivate many minds, especially immature or feeble. Hence, the timeliness of this book today. I strongly recommend it to both academic and non-academic readers.

Writing style hides many excellent insights
By Robert Ashton
Few are better qualified to "map and explain ... the "ideological storms" of a century second to none in violence, hubris, ruthlessness, and human sacrifices" as author Vladimir Tismaneanu. Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Maryland, Tismaneanu was born in Communist Romania (his parents had fought in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War) and he experienced first-hand the collapse of the Soviet system in Eastern Europe. Indeed, there is much of interest in this book particularly in highlighting the commonalities between Fascism and Communism and in his warnings of the dangers of resurgent nationalism. However, repetition, a very turgid style of writing and assumptions of familiarity with writers and critics from within Eastern Europe make sections of the book hard going, even for the reasonably well-informed reader.
The book, although looking at both Fascism and Marxism, is heavily weighted towards the Soviets. This is probably due to the author's own experiences but also to the fact that much of the excess of the Soviet experiment is only recently being fully explored. As Tismaneanu says: "the comparison between Communism and Fascism has been fundamentally tainted ... both by the claim of the original innocence of Leninism ... and by anti-Fascism's long-standing, resounding failure to denounce the murderousness and illiberality of Communist regimes." Some of this imbalance has been addressed by recent books such as "Lenin, Stalin and Hitler" by Robert Gellately and "Bloodlands" by Timothy Snyder, both quoted favorably by Tismaneanu. Although the focus on Communism is understandable I think more analysis of the Fascist regimes, including perhaps Spain and Portugal, would have been enlightening.
His core argument is that both Fascism and Communism had a shared goal of re-shaping the world through the destruction of modern liberal democracy and to, in essence, "build Heaven on Earth". Although one was based on racial purity and the other on class purity, both felt free to persecute and kill almost without constraint. Although the Marxists were clearly atheist and one can debate the religious position of Fascism: "(i)n fact, they were political religions, with their own rituals, prophets, saints, zealots, inquisitors, traitors, renegades, heretics, apostates, and holy writ." He highlights one of the major differences as being the importance and dominance of "the party" in Communism, which could survive changes in leadership (although the leader was very important), compared to the cult of the individual in Fascism. Obviously this aided the longevity of the Communist states but what would have happened in Germany or Italy is debatable. Both these regimes lost the war and a leadership transition never occurred.
This idea of the religious nature of the two philosophers repeats throughout the book, often really adding nothing new. This repetition is one of the issues I have with this book. The other major problem is the writing style. When I come across this type of writing from academics, I often wonder whether it comes from erudition or obfuscation. Whatever the cause, be warned that you will regularly come across sentences like this: "In other words, the historicity of Marxism, the moment of the Marxist self-consciousness was central to reinventing the true value of negativity as a new space for the affirmation of particularity against the spurious universality glorified by the system." (Author's italics)
In the end, Tismaneanu decries the totalitarian regimes for their abandonment of simple, established distinctions between good and evil. He says of the collapse of the Soviet system: "the core value restored, cherished and promoted by the revolutions of 1989 was common sense." This book contains a lot of very good analysis and draws many sensible and enlightening lessons from a terrible time. It is a pity that it is written in such a way as to discourage a wider readership.

TELL ALL BOOK ABOUT THE BOLSHIES
By R. E. Cohen
The Devil In History by Vladimir Tismaneanu is a terrific analysis of Leninism and Stalinism and how they stand in comparison to Nazism and Fascism. I am still in the middle of reading it and page by page it is revealing and illuminating. It also has a message for today - but no spoilers - read it!
